Had an air mattress once ..... never again, hate the damn things, always leak & they're cold.
When storage space is at a premium a self inflating mattress provides more comfort that those closed cell foam camping mats, & they come in various thicknesses, so can be pretty comfy.
In our bus we have a good quality foam mattress with a mesh underlay & an Ikea mattress topper. Very comfy, as good as the bed at home.
The roof topper on the Patrol was bought second (or third) hand & came with a knackered foam mattress which we decided to replace after sleeping on it a few times. Suprisingly a custom made inner spring mattress cost about the same as a foam plus under mesh. The single sided 'pocket spring' mattress we bought can be folded in half as easily as a foam one (important in being able to get it into the tent) & more importantly was lighter in weight. Haven't slept on it yet, but laying on it was sheer luxury. That becomes increasingly important as you get older, especially if intended for being used for extended periods.

Swag with a bunk mattress when going solo
Camping with family go the stretchers and sleeping bags. Stretches a heavy bastard but is comfortable.

I've got 2 single Dune 4wd self inflators. Just put the 2 together if and when the missus comes with me. Bloody comfy as mate due to them being 10cm thick. Thought having 2 singles would be better due to the bulky size of the doubles and queens.
Use to use a queen size air mattress, never again.... Too bloody cold to sleep on but they do store away nicely

Pop top 1984 camper converted to offroad if with the family.
If doing a boys weekend I have set up my drawer system to be the same height as the back seat when folded down, throw a matress over and It's very comfy and no annoying tents!!!

I for years used the rooftop tent, I also love sleeping in the swag but since we started using the camper trailer we have never looked back..... The best sleeps, instant tanious hot water system(showers) plenty of water and gas and storage... Love it

Camper Trailer when with the wife, swag when a blokes trip or a comfy bit of ground when I pass out.

I have the roof top tent and a stretcher and swag so if I can't be bothered doing the tent out with the awning stretcher and tent, if it pissun down swag on top of the drawers and black widow twin floor.
