The 2.8 diesel patrol gearboxes are the same as well. I think a 4.2 box would sap a lot of power behind an RB30 and you wouldn't like it at all.

Thanks blokes. I have decided to contact the mech, and ask him if it is possible for him to get a second hand gearbox and transfer, cheaper than the $1000 I was quoted. Hopefully, he might be able to rebuild the box, and I'll have to source a trans case. I will try to get him to inspect the clutch and flywheel, to see if they have much life left in them. If they are all good, I will take the old gear box and split it and the knackered trans case open, to see what needs rebuilding. Once that is done, I will save up for a heavy duty clutch, and get it all installed. That way, I can keep the second box as a spare, or sell it to recoup some of the cost.
I got some great news today. I was on the phone to a transmission specialist and gave him my VIN number. Apparently there are different types for different months of build. My gearbox has the specific gear ratios and synchros as he has in stock. The parts are genuine Nissan, too. :)
Good stuff mate. A lot less mucking around than a conversion too
Ynot and Happy's comments on how strong the boxes were, got me to rethink, but Matts comment about sapping too much power, just to drive the bigger box, was the decider. Now I'll download a service manual that covers the FS5R30A box. :)
