Would think the reason for all the washers maybe that was all that was available when repaired by previous owner, "O" rings come in very handy grab kits.
Once you service clean and replace any seals and "O" rings I'm sure you'll have many miles of trouble free motoring.
Try and de grease as best you can too.
The bolt for Banjo would bottom out allowing it to leak,bring in more washers to fill the gap and so on and so on

Guy's i have pulled the pump apart and the big o ring is as flat as a pancake , and looks to be falling apart . I presume the other o ring mentioned is around the shaft . I think i can see it , my next question is does this o ring require the alternator casing to be split to replace, or do you just pick it out and slip another over the end of the shaft.

Yes, If the inner seal is leaking you will have oil inside the alternator so you will need to pull it apart and clean it.
