I have my camera mounted on a small bracket ( which I made ) and it's bolted to the underside of the rear bumper on the passenger side of my tow bar . It's absolutely fantastic for reversing on to a trailer , I can position my vehicle with the tow ball directly under the trailer hitch everytime.
It has also saved me quite a few dollars in insurance claims as before I had it I managed to reverse into 2 other vehicles in tight car parks.
Having it there is the way to go.

I bought one and fitted it this weekend, I mounted it on the underside of the standard rear bar just next to the towbar, the one i got allows for 2 cameras so I will be mounting one on the back of the camper trailer as well. the only thing i did notice is that mounting it as low as I did the perspective in the camera is out slightly so what is actually about .5m looks like 3m on the screen. if you high mount the camera you get the opposite effect, they seem to be tuned to allow for the height of a normal cars numberplate, but in saying all that for the $200 it cost its worth every cent even with the issues i have mentioned
I did not wire mine up to the reversing lights either, i wired it to a switch, so I can choose when to use it, the wife leaves it on and uses it as the rear view mirror all the time, I did not get a mirror replacement screen, just mounted the little 3 inch screen on top of the dash above the heater controls

when the tongue is in you can see it in the left side of the camera, just a little bit of it makes it nice and easy to line up the trailer. when the tongue is out like it is in the photo you have a 100% clear view :)

Going to mount my camera{s} today weather pemitting , I have heaps of different styles of camera.
Did not like the rear view mirror type as they don't like rough roads and I mean rough, forever re adjusting it.
Plus with my tint not the best to look out of. As I have a number of screens I can power up a camera and see where best position is,
Everyone says to aim it at the towball, but I cant see how I'll get that vision from a number plate camera. Pics to come.
BTW a have a double din do everything media head unit
I mounted my rear camera just above the number plate. Having it down low I found it got real dirty, real quick and then it was useless.
Got one on the front too now which is handy for when 4wheeling and you come to a crest and can't see if anythings coming up the hill toward you.
This is what I see from the rear camera too.
I have the monitor mounted in place of the rear view mirror, & have not found it to be a problem. I live off a fairly potholed & corrugated road & have never had to readjust it.
I mounted the dual cameras as high as I could on the rear of the 'pod' as my main use for the camera is rear vision whilst driving, rather than just as a reversing aid. I find that 99% of the time I just use the narrower angle (60 degree view) because this gives much better 'depth of field' for rear vision when driving (can pick up other vehicles further away). It also works fine for reversing, but if their were little kiddies around I'd switch (on the monitor) to wide angle (180 degree view) for a better view immediately behind the vehicle.
Everyone I know who has bought a wireless camera says they wish they hadn't, mainly because of interference & mixed signals in built up areas. Probably not so much of an issue when out bush.
Go for a CCD camera, the image will be far superior to a CMOS one. The difference is chalk & cheese, I've had both. Also the larger the image sensor in the camera the greater clarity you will get.
