Sorry to drag up an old thread but im just about to install a trailer plug and will mount on the step as per this thread. My question do people do anything to protect the terminals on the back of the plug from water/mud etc? I was thinking to smother them in grease after the wires are fitted and tightened or is it just not an issue?
Not really an issue mate, when you do it you will note that the wires are pretty protected and tucked up up there.

@ PSR a coating of battery terminal spray, Lanotec might not hurt to weather proof it a bit more, water is the enemy eh
Theres a spray for everything isnt there :D I'll have a look for that one.
My post was done over 12 months ago mate and to date it has worked a treat and kept a lot of the regular mud out of the socket. Well worth doing that's for sure!
Especially when you drop into holes having the plug underneath the bar was always getting caked in mud and dirty water.
Great little mod guys. Shall change mine when I install the new tail lights..

Ok fellas need a bit of assistance, I went to wire up the plug, pulled the side panels off behind the wheel arches expecting to find the loom there but all i can find is a small loom feeding the reversing lights? Where does the trailing wireing typically hook into the loom on a GQ? My only previous experience with trailer wireing has been sedans where the loom is easily accessible from the boot.
Hey mate, you shouldn't need to go anywhere near the wheel arches. Just disconnect the battery, remove the wires directly from the plug under the bar, drill a hole in alloy bar, feed the wires through with some extra conduit so it doesn't rub against the hole cut and re wire....
There should be plenty of length to pull it up above the bar.
