My thoughts would be specialist blackfish ( ludrick reels ) you don't cast as such . Pay out a bit of line flick and move along with the tide .

TD - The reels were my gf fathers and he loved his fishing at any opportunity he could get when life was quiet on the farm. He had quite a few rods too of various sizes, which tells me he had a few species in mind for each rod. A bamboo / cane style of beach rod, a boat rod, 10 foot rod which is getting new guides etc attached to it at the moment and another rod of about 5 feet long.
Gaddy - I was told by an employee at a fishing store he thinks it was to do with blackfish (Ludrick reel), but wasn`t sure as he hasn`t seen a reel like the one I had. He had said to tug a bit of line out and drop it in to the water. On the web, there`s a site that shows how to cast some thing similar to the reel I have and I`ll know for sure when I rig it up to a rod if it works. Another site said some thing about streaming a bit of line off at first and flick it out, but may be difficult if doing it on rocks when waves are washing over them, as it may tangle the line. I`ll have to buy some new line, as I have used up my 600 metre line of 25 Lb (14.4 Kg) on an Alvey.
I still have dads full fibreglass surf rod its a Jarvis Walker "Kilcunda"
early 60s maybe even from the late 50s

None of those hollow fibreglass rods back then.
We used to make our own surf rods from a single piece of Indian bamboo 17' to 19' long
