So guys. Around the 10 months mark now to go.. How about we start making lists, groups etc.
Should we keep all here or should we beg Andy to make a sub forum where we can open threads dedicated to parts, routes across and also to and from different states??
Also maybe a to-do list before taking Off covering things to check to ensure everything is mechanicly A1?
I'm getting excited..
First post can be changed by all means.
I'm thinking we could carry a whole car in spares across the fleet, but the experienced blokes should make a list of spares..
I'm happy to carry radiator hoses, belts, spare fan(if deemed necessary) but also the welding gear..
Using this mc app I only just heard about this trip ( only been a member 6 weeks or so though lol).
Let me say I am 100% in on this I have a stock gu 4.2tdi ute that will be ready to go by then.
Always wanted to do Simpson but don't know many 4wders what better way to meet some
See you there
My car has still got a long way to go for this trip. Still need the long range tank (thinking about going with 2), drawers (which are being built right now), dual batteries, new radiator and I would like to have new tyres by then but my current ones will do the job and a front locker would be nice.
We'll mine is stock but has 175 or so litre tanks mods for trip will be simple don't want to waste all my coin
2 inch lift
Dual battery set up with solar panels
6 new tyres
Compressor
Recovery gear
Fridge, swag, beer oh and food
Yeah LRA is who I am looking at, I will most likely buy it through ARB here in warragul though.
got me 2"lift,200lt fuel.just sorting out camping gear..Winnie be good to see your draw set up when it is finished...Water storage and draws are the next to do list for me.Was going to bring camper trailer but thinking otherwise now days so there goes the idea of having enough water..after that it's just the usuall going over everything mechanical again and again...Want a set of gauges before I head off but have never bothered before so not necessary...It's the interior of my car that looks like crap, all my door trims are falling apart...P!ssing me off looking at them
I forgot to mention Rossco is also coming on this trip.
If my family can't come ill do it solo and possible double run with Dazz.
If family does come then I will have a 3 month old so only meet at dalehousie for the single run.
Sooo, who's meeting at Birdsvile for the double crossing??? And what date???
Me and Bene for sure. Need to have a look at the calendar. I intended to do a pretty quick east west crossing to get to the meetup then pretty casual back as I need to be careful to make sure I have enough leave. They only owe me 12 weeks at least plus long Service. Thinking of taking 3 weeks, maybe 3 and a half.
Thinking probably 26th or 27th June in Birdsville.
Na just a single here. Will be there a day or 2 early to settle.
Depending how the trip goes will determine if we do the flinders or not. Father in-law pointed out some nice tracks on the way home threw nsw, Vic, and home.. We'll see..
Got 1 week prior and 2 after so will be just cursing home..
Are you still thing flinders AB and Winnie?
I am taking my camper trailer, as you know it is a long wa from Perth and I expect to be away for about 3 weeks....
Scotty
Okay this is a question not just aimed that Gary but to everyone, the tyres I would take now are a 265/75 Maxxis AT700, how would they go in that country? If I buy new tyres they will be KM2s which would surely be better but if the ATs are alright I could put it off for a bit longer.
Sent from my iPad using Motorculture mobile app
Big tread blocks aren't as important as quality tyres in the best half of their life. If your maxis are worn to more than 60% remaining then leave them at home in my opinion.
The sand does not need a Muddy. Not sure about the flinders though mate??
If your going to buy K m2 anyway then keep the Maxiss for commuting and take the kms to the Simpson.
What's involved in coming???? Do you just rock up or what's the go???? I don't have Facebook if that's got anything to confirm.! I'm not sure if I can come!!!! But fingers crossed, would be a bloody great time, would be nissinsane
Pretty much mate, when the dates get near just keep your eye on this thread and keep in contact with the forum and the thread if you want to commute with other members from your area.
Where you located to Tonka?
A/T tyres my best bet for Simpson?
Even After buying a tent and a few odd bits to camp out of the car rather the the camper trailer I might have to pull out of this one:mad:
My wife's parents have invited us to there place In France and want us to go enough to pay for our flights so its going to come down to if We can afford the time off work for both trips FFS. Not happy jan!
I'd rather get drunk with you blokes lmao!
Just don't use old tyres the heat, load and corrugations will make them fail,
If you are buying new tyres anyway get a muddy, some people think that the large tread blocks are better for stones,
I've done cape York , the Kimberly , googs track, the Simpson and never had a puncher in the tread only the sidewall of Bfg muddies though the 2 sidewall punchers I've had we're km2's and 1 had the inside of the tyre delaminates without it showing on the outside, yet to check the other 5 tyers
Winnie, I had an interesting chat with Brett at 4x4 Obsession last week regarding tyres. Up until then I would have said KM's for sure but now......
In a nutshell he was suggesting that he's seen a lot of the current KM2's go out of round because of some crappy manufacturing faults. This is what he suspects is the culprit of my front end shake because everything else is tight-as in the front end. Michelin (who make them) shifted their manufacturing to China a couple of years ago.......
Make of that what you will.
Guys I have been looking for a water storage solution,so far I found this to look like a reasonable option. So while building my draws I might make them a little shorter to fit this behind the rear seats... https://ftaustore.com/categories/4x4...er-Flexitanks/ Anyone else found anything along the lines of these or better
Neil look up dolium in Perth, they do poly water tanks, I think they will be a lot stronger than the flexi ones and they are reasonably priced.
I might possibly join the guys doing the double crossing.
i went through all that a while ago researched flexi and plastic asked different people was looking for nearly 12months
it all comes down to taste with plastic after it warms up and of course the price
in the end i went stainless 60l and fits behind the back seats of the gu but then you have to look at how much you will use it
to warrent the price where as we are now pretty well set up for anything that we want to do from a w/end to a month
