The main reason I would buy a 22 would be price... I think it's gonna be a long time before I have a lazy $1500 to throw at a rifle, we'll see how I go.

I'm similar Winnie, was brought up shooting all types of guns but haven't shot anything in the last 5-10 years.
I've started off with a 22 and a 410 shotty and love the 22 mate.
I've fired hundreds now on the property and the bunnies love it!
Such an efficient way to get into shooting mate otherwise I would've taken an extra home loan out if I bought something bigger for now properly getting a gun license and learning again.
I'll keep that in mind, cheers.
As for scopes am I best to go to the shop and look through what they have and decide that way?
Yeah pretty much. But shop around on prices.
Melbourne firearms in Ringwood are good but pricey, Claytons prices are better bit the service can be hit or miss. Gun emporium and centreway are good.
I've found that the redfield revolution(not revenge) scopes are awesome for the price. Made in the USA and owned by Leupold.
I have a Savage 22 and it came in a Package with a Scope, given what you are going to be doing with the 22 the package deals are pretty hard to walk past. A 22 with matched scope for $350 odd bux. I reckon you spend the coin on decent glass when its going on a bigger rifle like the 223 or 3006 as the recoil destroys the cheap scopes but the 22 is pretty soft. I have no trouble looking through the package scope on the 22. Has seemed to hold its line pretty well too.
An old school mate owns a gun shop not 2 far from me and I'm still yet 2 own a rifle........... One day :)

Spied this ,but then thought how good torches are today this maybe a bit old school
All my 6D and C cell mag lites are packed away, even with a new Cree Globe is costs
a small fortune to fill the 6D with decent batteries.I have a couple of small ones that
are bolted to the barrel no name but a very spot beam
Yeah. AB, same here. we had a Sportco semi auto 22, which was bloody good fun. The first shotty I was allowed to use was a 410 single shot, which had been a converted 303 army rifle. It was barely adequate for rabbits, but was great for quail. The safety mech stopped working and it went off, so my father disposed of the gun.
joined the centre fire club today, got me a howa mini action in 223 rem, with a bushnell trophy 6-18 scope. pick it up in hte next few days then off to drop a few foxes
will do, looking forward to getting out and flattening a few foxes
Good to see there are a few hunters on here.
Myself usual 22RF, 22 Mag, Beretta 687S.
But my favourites are a ZKW-465 Brno 22 K-Hornet custom build with Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50, Rem 700 22-250 custom build with Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50, AIA 308W M10B2 target rifle with Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.
My new build is a Win P14 in 6.5 Epps ( 303 Brit necked down and Ackley improved with 35o shoulder angle ), Timney trigger, speed lock kit, 1:8 30" S/S Bartlien barrel, thumbhole stock , scope wise probably Vortex Razor. The list keeps going
Yes I'm into long range stuff and do most of my builds myself.
well heres my new little howa, 223 heavy barrell and bushnell trophy 6-18x50 scope, and a one of my adler a110 and my latest handy work doing a paracord wrap on the lever. hopefully get out soon and start flattening some foxes

What you like to know Sooty.
I have found the Vortex Viper Pst's to be excellent scopes. Comparing them to the Razor, NF, Doctor etc the colour rendition isn't quite there but good enough I'm not using them to take photo's with. The old man has found the same and is running PST's on his 22 hornet and 20PPC rifles.
The stock on the 465 is a Jeff Slee Walnut XXX grade thumbhole that I did the finishing in Tru-Oil also pillars installed and bedded. Barrel wise blued Tobler 22" 1:14 twist and using 13gr of Hodgdon's Lil-Gun and 36gr Barnes varmint grenades, velocity wise doing doing 3150fps.
The 250 is laminated thumbhole made by one of the benchrest boys at Little River again same as the 465. Barrel S/S 26" TSE fluted just slightly heavier than the Rem varmint profile 1:12 twist. About to try Hodgdon's CFE-223 powder running 55gr Nosler ballistic tips.
The 6.5 Epps will be a monster 30" Bartlien barrel not sure what the profile number is straight taper down from the breach to the muzzle and the muzzle is 1.5" dia with a 1:8 twist to run 140gr Bergers or Hornady AMAX's. The action is a Win P14 ( or Enfield P14 ) it is the only action besides a Ruger No1 ( they did make them in 303 for a short time ) that will handle the pressure's I want to run to get the full benifet. Everything pretty much is custom even the pic rail I have to mill up to fit. The stock is a Richards Microfits from the US of A laminated thumbhole 3" wide for end which I will send to the stock maker to use as a pattern to make one out of walnut or tasy blackwood. The reamer is on its way from US of A and should be here shortly then the fun begins and also have to make my own dies as well.
@Snafu thanks for that. No shortage of info there. I have heard good things about vortex vipers. I have an illuminated crossfire, not the greatest with the illumination on as it can glare a bit but for the price of it and its just on a bunny gun 22lr works well. I wouldn't mind trying to stretch out my .270win past 500m, and eventually get a more suitable long range rifle setup so it's good to see what others use. At the moment the main limiting factor for me is my rangefinder struggles above 650-700m and the hunting ballistic turret on the scope I have only has suitable adjustments for up to around 500m, but I am dropping roos consistently up to and just over that off the bipod.

The 270 Win is a good allrounder like the 2506, if the turrets only goto around 500m and you need to go further look into a 20MOA base. Another reason I like the PST's is the " ballistic reticle " hash marks every 1 MOA make hold offs easier and ranging ( if you know the size of the target ). But I prefer to dial for elevation but hold for wind as wind is a constantly changing.
The 6.5 Epps is being built for 1000y +, hopefully get the 140's running around 3200 fps maybe a bit more and with the BC's of the 140's at these speeds it will shoot flatter than a 300WM.
What scope you got on the 270Win ?
What I do is get the muzzle velocity using a Magneto Speed and the bullet's BC and run it through ballistic software. This give's me a head start on the ballistics then I head out with some bis 500 plate and do ballistic verification then I know the actual drops at varies ranges and make a note of.
@Snafu I have a meopta meostar 3-12x56 w/ the meopta hunting turret added on. I currently have a basic chrono for measuring my velocities and use a few ballistics apps to verify against real ranges. Will get a bis 500 target soon for the long target shots. Yeah I hold for wind but only have a basic reticle so limited there as well. This rifle is really my all rounder used for varmints -> deer. Would like a more suitable long range hunting rifle and scope set up one day. I currently run vmax 110's @ 3300fps for light duties and I am working up a 150gn load for deer (previously used 130gn factory SP)

The Meopta line of scopes I have heard are good never actually looked through one thou. The Vmax's would be like dynamite on thin skin and the 150's should be good for deer.
I have only been on the deer once and at the time had to use my 308 target rifle oh wasn't that fun my arms ended up 3" longer. But got a sambar which my mate was most unimpressed as I was using 150gr NBT and took his head off. He wanted to get it mounted.
In regards to your long range is it for banging steel and target work or hunting ? The 7mm and 6.5's are great for long range and good variety of high bc bullets. Hunting wise me personally the 6.5 is good for long range varmint shooting but anything heavier I believe it lacks the knock down power. Even if using like nosler bonded bullets or the like your shot placement is very critical. This is were the 7mm has an advantage in knock down and good ballistics espicially in the relms on the 7mm STW and the like.
The 300wm, 300 rum etc are also good long range plenty knock down and reasonable ballistics as well.
A good read is the books written by Bryan Litz of Applied Ballistics he also is the ballistian for Berger as well.
@Snafu yeah eventually hunting. 300wm would be the most I would consider I think, obviously the 6.5/7mm would be cheaper to run for long range target. My mate has the Bryan Litz book so I will have to grab it off him and get stuck into it. Thanks for the advice.

Reminds me of days of yore, when every shorty 40 and F100 had a rifle across the back window
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CENTER-LO...QAAMXQE9hR-rN6
http://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/e...cope-4-16x50mm
just watching a Deer hunting show on free to air, they were shooting deer at 400 yrds plus longest was 660 yrds
They used this scope thats more a computer, You feed the info of the ballistics of your rifle , shot used etc
They scope will take all this info and set the cross hairs. The scope is new to these mad deer hunters but
the scope has a 100% kill rate
Been around for a while the burris eliminators. Always thought about buying one but less skill and fun involved. If you think the burris is techo check out this fella....

My folks are having some issues with foxes on their farm, got into their chooks already once. Whats the best way to hunt them?
spotlight and or fox whistle, try make sure your down wind of where they are
The SSAA in conjunction with Parks-Vic have been having good daytime results whistling in the State forest adjoining us and many other areas in Vic.

I'd recommend a spotlight and go on foot, get a small battery (motorcycle or similar) and stay close to home at first. Once they've got a few easy pickings trust me they will be back and have spread the word.
Pick a moonless night and I found wind didn't really matter to much. I think my best effort in a few hours was five within 500 meters of the house and probably saw as many again but out of range. This was on foot and using a 22 magnum that night. I've also shot them by spotlight on foot using a shotgun but for that I needed someone to hold the spotlight.
They can be cunning and even raided the chook pen when I had the staghounds in the dog yard less than 20 meters away. You could hear them moving around the paddock near the house crying ( can't describe it as a bark) to check if the dogs were loose before they moved in.
They can also be stupid, I once shot a rabbit in broad daylight and a big dog fox ran out of the ferns and picked it up. He was in no hurry and didn't have time to take a step after looking around.
Whistling takes some practice, I've shot heaps this way as well but one might come at you at 100 kph at the first sound of the whistle and the next one would run away at the same speed.
Good luck.
Edit: Just read the link posted by MB and it states wind is important, we'll agree to disagree. It was never a major factor when spotlighting for me. (and I've been around longer than the author (just)).
well got me a new bang stick coming in a few days to chase a few deer, got a howa in 300wm with a ziess conquest hd5 3-15x42. hopefully get out next weekend to run in and sight in
You mean one of these ?

Don't actually use it much at all , in a club that do fox hunts but we have enough people so some line up and the others scare them towards the shooters .
One property we were on we had to look up in the trees , the cunning buggers were climbing up dead hanging branches and sitting on branches up in the tree , never seen it before .
Yeah thats the one, sends my dog bonkers ha ha ha
as for foxes up trees up Balranald one time we put
some dead rabbits up trees near camp and waited till the
foxes climbed up after them then BOOM no more foxes.
still havent come across a feral cat yet they are clever eh. lol
Next time you have spare fox tails give me a buzz.
A mate was going to make me a fox pelt doona for camp in winter.
but ended up getting a heap of roo pelts dyed and tanned and
my mate made a doona out of that, very warm on a cold night
Will do TD , I suppose they will freeze ok ?
