I am out with my kids today but on the way home I am going to stop and wash the engine....
There just seems to be too much coming from the engine gearbox????
Will know more later.
Also I topped up after another 50km and it was 10lt
I only get about 450km from a full tank (stock little pissy tank) N/Atd42
Yeah I am thinking the fuel economy is fine its the oil leak that is killing me.
I was comparing a stock tank with drews 140lt long range tank ...
Need to adjust my driving style to be a bit more economical. ....
Only just washed under the engine as I was to tired from my day out with the kids....
Now Mags is having a melt down about this bloody house again...... like I need that right now!!!!
How come the older I get I am more patient with things and she is getting less patient ???
You are not alone BA. Just don't ask her that question, these things never end well. Hope you get your oil leak sorted cheaply and efficiently.
Why does crap like this happen to good people. It s**** me... And the crooks out there are thriving!
My daughter was complaining about the smell today and told Mags about it.... she is now worried about the family being in the car for the High Country trip.
Good hey.. I dont blame her but it does get me down.
Oh well onwards and upwards!!!
Did you find anything when you washed it?
EDIT: Actually, what I think you said earlier (I think) might be the answer......is the smell magnified in the car because if the qtr chop?

I still have some fumes coming in the back of my Old Trol under heavy acceleration, even after using foam tape to seal the doors, so the smoke from an oil leak could very well get sucked up through the open panels. I have just read some of the work required for the oil pump. Radiator, shrouds, belts harmonic balancer etc. Big job if that is where the leak is.
Nice ride :smiley_thumbs_up:
My tensioner for the aircon was making heaps of noise so I managed to get a new one and fitted late today.... it was so loud it was embarrassing.
Also noticed idle was a bit funny so got the multi meter onto the tps and it was sitting on 5v so dropped it back down to 4v and adjusted the idle to suit.
Was in the middle of doing the mod on the viscous fan when the special oil I had disspeared right in front of me and after 30min of going crazy I just gave up and walked away...beer in hand and onto computer
Just a little update... if its not too annoying and that is George fixed the oil pump leak just before our big trip and the car ran like a dream but there is another oil leak that is coming from the gearbox I put in from the donor car as my gearbox was noisy in 5th gear and syncro's were starting to play up a bit.
Many have been commenting about the smell as to have I and it seems the oil is running down the fork on the thrust bearing and landing on the exhaust leaving all who travel inside with burning eyes !!!!
Now I have to work out how I will approach this next issue?? As we were driving down to Dargo Mags was asking me to just sell the car and buy an X-Trail... she is so funny!!!
Your not getting a break are you? What a sh*t about the oil leak. A prick of a job for just a seal...Back to George's workshop?
Yeah pretty hard pill to swallow as I am the most broke I have been in years but I cant just lay down and do nothing??
Other problem is my back is really bad? ?
Anyway onwards and upwards. .
hmmm, let me think of a come back on this one...bwahahaha PFC!
We just could not afford it right now even if I wanted to..... to be honest I am so close to having a decent rig be it a petrol gussler but I have done so much and of course would not get it back if I sold it.
Wahoo... time to put my apron on and cook dinner !!!!
How are all your door seals if it smells as much as you say,
not good smelling/breathing fumes while driving major head aches.
A big safety issue
Anyway you don't come across as an x trail kind a guy .... more a Nissan Juke driver instead . hehe..
Yeah Roofy the last time I was this broke was when I was supporting my mum about 5 years ago... paid her rent for a year, killer !!!
We will work through it though.
Not sure which way to go as it can be very expensive to rebuild a gearbox but I am having no luck with second hand of late????
I dont want to leave it too long as there is a brand new Ci clutch in there and I am worried it will turn to shit with oil getting on it.... hmmm
Good luck BA, you don't deserve this crap.
The second hand gearbox I had put in my Old Trol has the same issues with the synchros in second gear, so I regret not getting a reco box. One wrecker in Melbourne (sorry, can't remember their name) reckon they do a partial reco of some boxes but still only offer a three month warranty.
Why do you need to rebuild the box?
If there is oil in there mate I would be wanting to repair it as soon as possible cos if the friction plate becomes oil impregnated then it will need to be replaced. Also are you keeping an eye on the oil levels so you know exactly where it's leaving from?
This box bites.... mainly 2nd gear and it also drops out of third and its own.
Still working out the best options now as this is all new.... I took a punt thinking that the box had done half the km's mine had done so thought I would be on a good thing, I was wrong and right??
My old box has a noisy 5th plus can be hard changing gear mainly in 4wd and also a very noisy bearing (George knows which one) as the one in there now has no bearing noise.
In trying to save a dollar I end up spending more.... lesson in this folks!!!!
What oil are you using?
BA wrote; but there is another oil leak that is coming from the gearbox I put in from the donor car as my gearbox was noisy in 5th gear and syncro's were starting to play up a bit.
Not that the synchros are playing up.
I need new spectacles, as I misread his post. (Two times in as many days). The front seal only needs replacing. DUH mudnut read things more closely...
I would have to go outside and its cold and wet.... the bolts in my neck might rust???
I cannot be 100% sure as I have done a big clean up and cannot remember if I used something else or if I did use the bottle of Castrol VMX80
My socks are wet!!!
So, gl-4 as opposed to gl-5 is still an issue, Matt? That could be the reason my other box failed because Nulon reckoned their gl-5 oil was the one for my RB30 gearbox, and I used it.
