Your device would need to be rooted too. But with a different file download. Same instructions though.
The thing is the file system on the SD card is now basically in android form ( yes for all the tech heads out there i know its not entirely true) and its encryption is on there too. Makes it very hard to read just plugging the SD card into a pc.
Best bet would be to root the phone and then via pc perform the recovery. Rooting the phone gives you unlimited access to the file system and allows the recovery software to run properly. Especially in the case of Wondershare software.
The 2 programs i use mostly are Wondershare Dr Fone and Aiseesoft Android Data Recovery.
Recuva I used sometimes as well. With these programs you can deep scan a lot more and its easier to see what is junk and whats not once the scans complete
