Yeh the mother of pearl is starting to fall off and one of the gold emblems has gone but the blade is still very sharp, it's not a high ranking officers sword as it doesn't have a family crest on the blade.
Very nice sword the makers name will be under the handle as it all pulls apart very easily.
does it have a harmon line on the blade, its where they clay temper it and looks wavey.
makers name will be under the Fuchi [handle]on the Nakago [tang]

@ Growler I found one of those knives with its pouch on the road years ago. great knife.
@ Kallen you'll still need to harden then temper it, 6mm is a bit big for pins, try some 1/8th
bronze rod, you'll also need some CA glue
I'll put pics up of my swords today [3] some are folded steel, which is similar to Damascus
And yes Stropp they are sharp, one is WW2 STD issue, same as this one

Better get all the terms right so we all know what we're talking about, the handle is called scales one each side
normally sold 5" long x 1"1/4 wide x 1/4" thick, camel bone it great to work with as you can even scrimshaw it.
Some great man made procducts, but as I said look around as you can use anything,
I used some red gum from Bunnings for my fillet knife and sheath, once you're hooked there is no going back.
@ Kallen this looks like your one

Some Japanese Katana
Yea similar, concave tip but a mean looking bit of gear still.
Yea getting my head around all the terms..
Going to use ply scales.. Cheap and easy, once I find my groove I'll try more exotic materials.
Already had a request.. Mums side of the family tree are all chiefs so I'll be criticed hard..
doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it holds its edge is the main thing I suppose.
Ply will be ok after you sand it smooth dip it in boiling veg oil for some colour, rub it with steel wool to polish
Just drilled the tang... :D
And then harden it. Gotta get the oil ready first.
Thinking I might acid etch and stone wash it to. Why not go all out on the first one hay..
If you have letter stamps ,,,stamp a K or W on it before you temper it.
I temper by placing in oven and turning to 450 leave for 2 hrs and let cool on its own
