Conflicting EGR info

Dudes and Dudettes,

I have been trolling through as many threads as I could find on blocking the EGR but I haven't been able to find a solid thread on whether or not you can/should block the EGR on a RD28T in a GQ. Mine is a 95 with the mechanical fuel pump. I may not be looking in the correct place, but if you can help me out I would appreciate it! I have just recently rebuilt mine and before I get it tuned I was wondering whether I should give blocking the EGR a nudge to see if there is any noticable difference beforehand. Also thinking of having a crack at winding up the boost myself too, no idea how to do it though.

Your thoughts please! :)

Cheers Ferret, I definately have the EGR, no doubt about that, I'm just wanting to see if anyone has actually done it and/or recommends doing it to the GQ 2.8's. I've found quite a bit on the GU's but they look like a totally different motor.

And secondly, i was hoping you might slip an answer into this one, because my next question was going to be about the SS block plates that you may do for them. :thumbup:

Hi Mate, Yes I do the stainless plates for the 2.8.
You shouldn't need to do anything else as the boost is limited and the EGT won't go high unless you fit 3 inch exhaust and fiddle with the turbo.
Blocking the EGR will let it spool up about 300rpm quicker.

Technically blocking the EGR is illegal. But like most other things, it's only illegal once you've been caught.
The price of the blocking shim is a bit excessive too IMO. A piece of a cut up beer can will do the same job, plus it's cheaper and you get to enjoy the beer aswell.

Thanks mate, so Ebay is the best way to go if I was to purchase said stainless plate? I've never used ebay, spose there's no time like the present though! I am in Perth, does anyone distribute locally for you?

I understand that, but I like to do things the best way I can (I work in engineering) so stainless would definately be the way to go I reckon. I'm all for beer too but, cans...Hmm, unless of course it's JD in the can I much prefer stubbies!:cheers:

You're right - you can use a piece of cut up beer can, but because beer can aluminium is so thin, it will disintegrate in a relatively short time, with the risk of it ending up in the cylinder.
Buying one is more expensive for sure, but you get stainless-steel, proper thickness, perfect fit. The cost is in not just the materials used, which is not big, but in cutting, shaping, drilling, linishing and ensuring it is flat and fits perfectly, which all takes time. You can still enjoy a beer after you drop it in. :)
... and keep in mind blocking the EGR is technically only for off-road performance use.

I did mine when i had 2.8 in a gq and it worked for me still a cheap mod considering the gains achieved.
