Brake Upgrade - GQ TD42
Hi Forum,
I have a 1991 GQ Patrol LWB, it basically has no brakes left. I've been quoted $5000 to fix them including a swivel hub rebuild. I ran into a comment PeeBee posted about the willwood brakes and all of the different options hes tried. Right now I'm seriously considering going with exactly everything he said except for GU Booster/master cylinder then I saw saw his comment about still not being happy and swapping to a marks4wd hydraulic booster kit but then I'd have to change tyres as well, I have Allied Thunder Black Chrome 16 x8" alloy wheels Near new 285/75R16 Nitto Trail Grappler mud tyres
Ideally I would pay the $5000 and get the brakes done but I don't want to dump 5k into them and still have old GQ brakes that don't stop the 4x4 well at all even when they are 100%. I was looking into GU diffs but I have an ARB air locker and an Harrop e locker that wouldn't work with GU Diffs as the ratio is different.
So now I'm tossing up between, the willwood front and rear + proportioning valve + willwood master cylinder, braided lines, marks 4wd hydraulic booster. But then I need new tyres as well and would need to be engineered so very costly but absolute best of the best and I ever went to GU diffs they would work with them.

I fitted the Marks hydroboost and braided lines to my GU III, didn't change the factory rotors or pads, and I was incredibly happy with the difference in breaking performance.
I would recommend doing hydroboost first, then buy and fit rotors and pads.

I was thinking hydroboost but it’s more complex and more to fail. Heard a few people saying they don’t like the feeling of it compared to vacuum

AS we conversed in the PM's, the Willwood set up with Hydroboost over the top definitely works, however the stock pads from Willwood are too hard and take enormous amounts of heat to work, plus the disks glaze up with repeated moderate braking as seen in the suburbs.
The progressive vac over hydraulic feel disappears and its a very hard pedal with little feedback, and so easy to lock up the rubber, especially in the wet. Couple that with next to no rubber on the road when running mud terrains and its a seat by the pants driving experience at times!!
Changing the front pads to a different softer model has greatly improved the outcome, however the cost is significant - the front pads alone were a $500 upgrade, so have left the standard rear kit pads as supplied for now. Based on the thickness of the pad material it will be 300 yrs before replacement required.
The stock pads got me thru the GVM brake test with single pot calipers, so factory pads under Willwoods as Cremulator advises sounds pretty good. We will all be keen to hear back from you as to the outcome - choices for everything these days.
