Source 3.54 diff gears

Hey all,

I’ve fitted a Mercedes OM648 into my 1998 2.8td GR Wagon, looking to fit the higher ratio 3.54:1 ring and pinions that came on your 4.8 Autos, or the 3.9:1 from the 4.2 diesel.
I believe both vehicles run the H233 front and rear.

I think that I’ve got the right info there.

Can anyone recommend a good source for them?

I have put a wanted ad up, and my 4.62 gears will be available.

Welcome to the forum. Where are you? We have plenty of places in Australia, such as Patrolapart (see button for Patrol Parts at top of forum page) or 4x4 wreckers but freight will be expensive. I could be wrong, but I think some places in Africa ands Middle East might have the 4.8 litre Patrol.

Hi mate, the 4.6s are desirable and you should not have a problem selling them. Honestly i would list them on FB Marketplace.

Regarding the 3.5s... I cant really help you with that but can advise that the 4.8 came with the H260 and not the H233. I believe that the boys doing the Brunswick Diesel conversions fit the 3.5s and gobble them up. @PeeBee is that right?

Brunswick offered me the 3.5's when I did the conversion with 4.6's. They did say there had been strength issues with 3.5's due to the low down torque and I settled on 3.9's. 3.9's are brown dogs in the marketplace like 4.1's. Saying that it depends on how you drive it as well. Looking at a pure RPM assessment, the 3.5's with a manual TD box would probably land you on the money in the engine revs sweet spot. Running 3.9's with 33's I was sitting at 2050rpm. I installed Marks 4x4 overdrive 5th gear and it sits at 1725rp,, perfect number at cruising in 5th. Maybe ask the question on the Chev 6.5 forum for comment. My info s related to a 6.5Chev Supercharged. I am also running 85% reduction in low range so my rpm is stretched at both ends.
