Can anyone tell me if the passenger airbag deployes from the top of the dash or from the space above the glove box in a 2009 wagon.

Mine has never gone off, but i have always known them to come out of the top of the dash, meaning the whole dash needs to be replaced if they operate.
This is also the reason why dash mats have a cutout on them on the passenger side.
The front cover is just an access panel to get to it.....
