Diesel Pre Filter plus Factory Filter

2006 TD42 DX Patrol Ute

G'day everyone,
I'm new to 4x4, have only had my rig for a couple of years and as far as I know it's still stock.
I'm lined up to have a pre-filter (professionally) installed.
The local shop uses the Flash Lube brand with the clear bowl which I think will do.
I'm wondering though ... is it a simple matter of them hooking it up, plumbing it in and all will be well?
I've been reading about lift pumps being necessary & as embarrassing as it is to say it ... I wouldn't know if I have one yet from factory or not.
Just thought I'd start by seeing what experienced people thought here / ask silly questions here before asking them elsewhere.

Hi mate, yes i would consider adding a Lift pump toyour setup. You do not have one from factory. The Fuel pump creates vacuum and sucks out from the back tank to the back of the pump, adding a further restriction just ades to the Starvation. adding some positive pressure to the back of the pump will be rewarding.

I nuffy second MRTD’s kind guidance there, especially if looking to tackle some steeper ongoing mountain tracks.
Fuel delivery wise when ‘climbing’, imagine how hard our poor old highway level built injection pumps are working their arses off when the pickup point is some 0.5m below the now ‘climbing’ level line if that makes sense.
Once did properly starve my 6.5L Chev NA through a GU donor system as their injection pump is even higher again way up top on the front of the big V front end [emoji51]
Instant air sucking power injection somehow experienced I assume and a full out of control climbing wheel traction loss had me stuck on a ledge with a potential broken valve spring [emoji2959][emoji1696]

Just make sure you have spare filters on board. I know those filters your mechanic will use, and they are not something thats easily available if you are out in the middle of shit creek with a blocked filter. Also another concern is the flow rate. while it will be good with a stock TD42, having two fuel filters inline will create flow issues with a modified TD, even a modified ZD.

Not having a go, and might learn something here myself, but why would you need a pre filter in a TD42?

The only reason I think, is if you live in a remote area where fuel supply is less than desirable.

Really they are beneficial to catch water in fuel and other contamination found in crap tanks. Even the onboard tank.

Umm yeah, but the standard fuel filter has a water bowl and drain valve at the bottom, so why do you need another to complicate things?
