Hello all,
I start to see Patrols in order to find the "one".
How prone in the Patrol chassis (and rust in the bodywork, for instance in the rear doors) to suffer from rust?
Is it normal to see a swivel hub that seems to be covered al over with surface rust?
And the axles, with visible multiple rust areas, is it normal?
This was observed in a 20 years old y61.
Depending on how the car is treated mate.
Mine was used for fishing occasionally in the ocean. And was never washed after each trip. Photo down below speaks results.
I got all that fixed. Chassis is like new.

To much rust or acceptable?
Under her on the chassis is usually the most devastating spot and the same under the foot wells (in the chassis)
Rear shoulders and roof gutter over the rear windows can be bad.

I think its done a lot of Ks on dirt roads ,then been sitting around for ages.
Personally I'd walk away you may find the loom is stuffed as well just my
opinion happy to be wrong
The patrol has "only" 178xxxkm and 19 years, is not to much road for the age.
The owner died recently, he used to use it rarely to go hunting. My guess is that the car has been parked for long with little or no use in the recent years.
The interior is all leather in a pristine condition, its pity to let go... but I will let it go.
To much trouble to put the car as I like them, in a good condition.
Its really hard to tell from the pics.
You would have to get under it and have a good look with a torch.
If its surface rust then no drama. Clean it all down with a high pressure hose and spray rust converter everywhere. Then hit it with chassis black if you like. If its starting to get rot in the chassis then stay away from it.

Over here in the UK that would be considered is non-rusty example.
The rear ends always get the brunt of wear from debris etc. and are more prone to surface de-lamination as in the photo.
Basically the factory paint finish has thinned and lifted. No dramas.
The chassis box sections, rails, tubes and welds are the most critical areas where moisture can penetrate, and need more careful inspection.
Chassis box sections and cavities rust from the inside out. Luckily the Patrols have loads of access points to be able to inject some rust prevention.
Check the crossrails under and around the radiator/headlight area and run your hand under each wheelarch to.
