GU just died???
Hello all,
I was driving my 2007 GU DX Walkabout up the freeway the other day and I noticed it lacking power going up an incline. I looked at instruments and all was fine. I put my foot on the clutch and it stopped running with all dash lights coming on. I then dropped the clutch again and it started running again still with lack of power. I pulled over into service lane and put foot on clutch again and again it stopped. I came to a halt and the temp gauge was now right up. I let it cool and checked water which was ok. Tried to restart and she won't start. Tried this several times and the best it would do is idle real rough for 10 secs. or so, however have not been able to do this again since. Turning her over creates a clunking noise (sort of like out of tune). She has an oil leak from around the turbo somewhere that I just couldn't track down so I treated it as a continuous oil change, just topping up all the time.
Changed fuel filter, still same.
Would appreciate any ideas you may have.
Thanks Wayne01

I sent it to a 4x4 workshop and was told they think it may have blown a hole in a piston.
I would like to do a compression test but I don't have a modern kit.
I have an older type compression tester that you just push against the hole and get a reading with motor turning over.
Would that be good enough to do the job? I was going to do this by removing the glow plugs.
Also the primer bulb doesn't get hard when I pump fuel up.
I removed it and tested it and the non-return valve works but once installed it won't get hard.
Is this normal?

Was it blowing any smoke when it was still running before it died?
...........on the road

No smoke. All fine on the gauges, just lost power. No bang.

Dis-connect the battery for 1/2hr to re set the ECU
do the small things first,,,lol

I have had the batteries disconnected for recharge. About 12 hrs.

Could the rail pressure relief valve have blown ?
If so, all the fuel pressure created by the pump will be sent directly into the return fuel line. This means very little , if any, diesel pressure gets to the injectors.
This could be why she cranks but no cigar.
