Brake failure / wheel bearings

So i had a fun experience today.

A little while ago my mechanic told me the front bearings would need to be replaced soon. No dramas.

Driving to work this morning started hearing a grinding noise while driving then a clicking/clunking noise while turning. Firgured mustve been the front bearings. Started looking around at kit prices at work (might as well get paid to do it).

Started the drive home and grinding noise horrible with what also sort of sounded like rubber rubbing but could of just been the horrible squeak noise.

Getting towards home and at a nice downhill section felt a shudder and clunk and steering went loose. Tried to apply brakes but foot straight to the floor. Shite i thought. Luckily no one infront of me and was able to safely stop.

Stopped. No leaking fluid. Brake fluid fine. Couldn't see any obstruction with the pads. And auto hubs bloody hot to barely touch.

To the floor. Any ideas? Hoping a simple replace bearings job or wishful thinking. Sorry for the long post also.

Shot wheel bearings will hugely affect your braking. Jack the front of the car up and grab a wheel at the top and bottom and see if it wobbles back and forth. That'll tell you the state of your bearings and if you get any play then I would check them for replacement.

X 2 with above also check to see how much pad is left.
Did the steering wheel shake at all....clicking when turning
indicates that a CV is shot, but check the other things first

Yeh I just had mine replaced as I was getting bad grinding noises as well, luckily never had any issues with braking though!! Good to know Winnie

Rotor mounted to hub, caliper mounted to steering knuckle. Any play in hub will cause rotor to wobble and push brake piston furthur into caliper, meaning more fluid will have to be pumped into piston before pads contact rotor. That is best case scenario.
Test.... vehicle parked, pump brakes, pedal should go hard within a few pumps and stay hard.
Other scenario.... heat from bearing boiled the brake fluid. Test....pump brakes, may go hard, but will be soft again after you take foot off brake. Fluid will need to be changed.
Either way check pads for uneven wear and calipers for damage from rotor.

There are obvious annoying signs of bearing wear before it hits the catastrophic failure.
Brake pads on the other hand, can start grinding fairly quickly.

I was assuming it's the front.

i got fed up with shoes failing so disc all round now. i'd be pulling all the wheels to check all the brakes. if you can't remember when you last changed the fluid, its due. or 2 years is often throne around.

also check wheel bearing play and if the front i'd check kingpins as well.

Yes front sorry. Thanks for the responses. Managed to limp it home last night and front left auto hub was bloody hot after so leaning towards bearings. Will be having a look tomorrow.

On the unfortunate side, some little so and so's decided to smash all the passwnger side wi dows where it was left overnight. That was bad enough as now the new baby seat is full of shattered glass but, also taken my fridge, ipod and some uhf radios. Half my fault for stupidlly leaving them in there. More pissed about the baby seat as will have to some fork the cash to buy a new one, who knows how long insurance will take. Would love to fet my hands on the POS.
