Winch working.... not working

Hi guys and girls,

First I wanna start with saying I am.not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to 12volt.
Truth be told I don't even know how to change out a stereo.
But this year I have decided I wanted to become more experience in the 12 volt department as a self progression pact I've made to myself where every year I pick something to learn as a skill to better myself.

So to start with my winch is playing funny buggers,

When you connect the cable to it amd press unwind it goes out no problem.... hook it up to a tree and then put strain on it and it decided to cut out completly... then I will play with the controller pressing ( wind wind wind) on the controller and nothing, let it sit there for a bit... then will sort of work then stop again.

Any ideas?

Also if you could advise what I'd need tools wise to check ie multimeter etc that would be great.

Before committing to pulling it apart. Check the easy things first ... the solenoid/s, and that all connections are made & tight on the winch, the hand controller, and the battery.

is your battery going flat?
try it with the motor running

Along the same lines, check your heavy duty wiring to the winch and the connections for corrosion. Often 12v will pass through a corroded terminal but then when loaded and trying to pull large currents it will fail. Happens with starter motors, the owner recons his starter motor wont turn over but he can see 12v at the terminal.

What winch? And what solenoids? As others have said double check connections and have engine running to rule out battery.
Mine used to do that and it was due to 1 or 2 solenoids playing up in the 4 pack warn solenoid. Replaced with albright solenoid and problems gone.

Also check to see if the cables, connections and motor aren't getting excessively hot.

Check the small earth cable from solenoid pack, easy to assume its unimportant but could be loose.

Hi guys, yes this is happening to me whilst the vehicle is
Running. Winch is a warn high mount.

Some more info on the Albright solenoid would be good.

An albright solenoid is a more modern solid state solenoid. Less moving parts and things to go wrong. Generally I sealed unit waterproof? (at least resistant) and does away with the 4 individual solenoids warn originally used which are prone to failure as the age.

Check out ebay or google for albright solenoid. TG Thompson solenoids are another variation that are usually a bit cheaper and guys have had good success with them too. I personally have the albright.
