Just bought a ToughDog coil-over RTC steering damper and want to fit it tomorrow. Are there any tricks that I need to know before replacing the worn-out factory one? Does the Patrol need to be jacked up on the front to change it or can the wheels be on the ground?
Steering wheel sits a bit cocked to the right after the 2" lift. Will fitting this help correct that?
Very simple. Should bolt straight in as the car stands. You may need to turn the wheel a little to open or close the gap with the spring.
Loosen the spring on the dampener. Prior to removal of the old unit have.your wheels straight and mark the inner section of the old dampener where the outer section covers it. This is so you get the right length on the new item.
Then measure end to end and adjust the new dampener to the same as the old one. Tighten up the spring and fit up the dampener.
If your vehicle wants to pull to either side you losen off the spring and put more of less tension on the spring( depending on which way its pulling) by sliding the spring clamp along the dampener tube.
This wont help your issue of the steering wheel offset. The best way is to get an adjustable drag link, the arm from the steering box, or remove the steering wheel and move it a notch or two on the spline.
