Notchy steering
Hi,
My 2005 3.0 diesel seems to have notchy steering.
There is a bit of play in the steering, and once moving, it seems notchy and difficult to keep in a straight line.
It has done 157000km.
Being new to these I am unsure where to start.
Any help would be appreciated.

Jack up the front a put on stands then turn the wheel to see what you can find
-
could be the steering box adjustment is overtightened as mine was notchy when mine was done, so i loosened it off and it was good again, there is a nut on the steering box that needs loosening then use a screwdriver to adjust the centre bolt and tighten the nut again
-
Check power steering fluid as well,

Thanks for the information.
It will have to wait until the weekend. Will see what I can find.

So today, I had another look at my notchy steering.
I backed the adjustment screw out and kept turning the steering back and forth.
Got lots of backlash in the steering.
I then proceeded to re-tighten the adjuster, until It went tight.
I still had some back lash in the steering.
Took it for a drive, then back again and took up more slack.
I then decided to leave the engine running while making the adjustment, thought maybe having P/S pump running would make a difference.
Took two more adjustments with a drive in between to get things to settle.
It feels a lot better now.
I was wondering whether anyone runs different tyre pressure to what is recommended in the cubbie hole.
Mine were set really high, but backed them off to the recommended serrings.
All feels good now.
Still not super tight steering, but then again with those big tyres, there would be some 'woolyness'.

I run 40 psi in mine,, glad the steering feels better.

After driving for a week or so the steering started feeling sloppy again.
So went down the route of making tiny adjustments and driving it for a few days.
I can say it is the best it has been, and I feel a lot more confident with it now.
Thanks for all the advice.
