rd28eti crank pulley removal

g'day legends,

I'm in the process of replacing the timing belt and as per the diagram in the manual it shows to use a puller to remove the crank pulley.

If anyone has done this job lately did you need the type of puller shown in the manual (a wide one that grabs the back of the pulley) or can you screw in bolts to the face of the pulley and set up a puller that way?.

I went to a few auto places today and all the pullers they had only stretched out to 150mm wide, this doesn't seem to be wide enough as the pulley looks to be at least 170-180mm wide.

Any ideas on a nifty way to lock the ring gear without removing the starter would be handy too.

So to put it another way, how do i remove the crank pulley?. I have seen plenty of threads that cover things like this in practical terms from start to finish but not the one I'm after.

Remove two M6 screw and using a longer M6 (must be a 10.9 screws , not a soft ones ) screws to bolt a piece of respectable solid , at least 14 mm thick flat iron with a central M12 screw you can improvise a puller .
In same way you can remove crank timing pinion , but must cut a M6 threads at a two oposite holes .

Best way to imobilise cranckshaft is using a special comb ( must remove starter ) , or work very very careful at timing setup without locking .

donk all back together and running.

crank pulley bolt was easy to get off, didn't need a breaker bar.

used a harmonic balancer puller ($26 at repco) attached via M6 bolts into the 2 threaded holes in the face of the crank pulley, used the pulley bolt to push against.

stopped the ring gear with a small jimmy bar/ flat wedge and clamped it in place against the steering rod with a quick grip clamp.

would have been nice to know I needed a torx type screw bit to remove the tensioner pulley to replace it, but of course the info is in the manual

the Nissan manual is shit,

many lessons learned, but timing belt replaced
