Tb42s no idle, hard start

Hey guys. I've got an 89swb tb42. After a hard day out at cityview park, when leaving my shorty lost it's idle speed. I can keep it running using the hand throttle, at 1100 rpm. Anything less than that and it just dies straight away. Doesn't seem to have lost any power at all. At the higher end of revs I have noticed a slight miss, but that's only 3000 rpm or more. And then this morning she just wouldn't start. I had to pour some petrol down the throat of the carby, and she started, but still no idle. Anyone else had similar or able to help me out with this?

i have this at the moment mate what you need to do is put a carby kit through your carburettor. if its anything like mine your idle jet is blocked and your accellerator pump is playing funny buggers.

you can get the kit off ebay for $80 its pretty simple to do but you will still need someone to tune it properly once it is done. Alternatively you could stick another carby on eg. holley 350

I've recently put a carby kit through it, maybe 2 months ago. I was thinking something fuel delivery wise, so I'm going to do my fuel filter this arvo. But after looking through the forum a bit more it sounds like my idle jet is clogged :(

So I swapped 3 and 4 leads around and made it backfire, runs like a dream right now :) new fuel filter to go in this arvo

Are you still on points or have you put electric ignition in?

Still on points for now. Electric happening sometime after Christmas. Recommend the lobe sensor or Hall effect type?
My shorty's running great now, haven't had another issue yet.

The back fire probably dislodged the crud that was blocking the idle jet. I would spray some carby cleaner into the carby.

I wonder if the rag trick would work, if it blocks again. I had a lazer years ago, once in a while the idle jet would gummy up. The trick was to have the air cleaner off start the car, rev it and then shove a towel over the carby. The car would stall, but the motor would suck the idle jet clean

The rag trick was recommended to me by a mate that used to work at recent, but he did say to make sure it was a thick and sturdy towel other wise it may suck straight through.

I have the pertronix2 module and the flamethrower 2 coil. There is a thread about it here you'll find if you search. Sorry, I can't post a link at the moment.

Edit: good to hear it's running well now. As mentioned above, I would also suggest a good going over with carby clean and then lube up the external linkages with some crc etc
