Not sure what Cable you are talking about but I would suggest that there is a bad connection on that Cable.
hi Bob , hope these pics help about the cable i'm talking about.
Sounds like your idle needs adjustment.
Haven't got a broken return spring or similar some where. doesn't sound like its to much of a big fix
Maybe try lubing up the cable with a bit of crc. Check for any sharp bends where the cable may have cut through the casing?
Tap, crackle, pop
Does it run if you have your foot on the gas pedal? It should'nt matter if you have your foot on the pedal or not, it should run. Try turning up your idle screw.

i think there is something wrong at this end of the cable as it doesn't move or even make a sound when u turn on the key. someone said apparently you should hear it engage or at least see some movement
Ah the old SD33. I had one of those. That in the pic is what cuts the engine out. Check the electrical connection to that motor as when there is no power to that motor it pulls on the cable therefor shutting the engine down. That motor is activated by your ignition switch. Check all wiring and FUSES too.
This is going by memory of 15 years back too so I may well be wrong.
thanks for all the suggestions everyone , i will check them all out and let you know if any worked. cheers
