Intercoolers + Mud...

Hi, I'm in the proses if getting all the bits needed for my TB42c-RB26DETT conversion. I have come to the Intercooler part of the plan and have been thinking about Mud and intercoolers. Seeing as my Radiator gets full of mud after a big day in the bush and the motor starts to warm up, what good will a FMIC be when it is also full of mud? Plus the FMIC will be blocking most of the air flow to my radiator already so I'm thinking that it is going to over heat very quick.

So... Would it be better to just not run a FMIC or TMIC??? I think not... I am thinking of running a Air-Ice intercooler, options of a water/ice box pumped through the intercooler or dry ice straight on the intercooler.

Has anyone ran anything like this before? or know how Dry ice would go all day, and I'm not talking about "Drag Racing application" I'm talking about out in the bush in the heat for hours and hours with the RB26 under constant and prolonged load. Air intake and water temps make a lot of difference to a motors performance and reliability, I wouldn't want the RB26's life to come to a short end because of hot air or water, and let's face it FMIC's or TMIC's only do their jobs if they have a lot of "Cold" air passing through them... Let me know if you have ever been doing 100km/h in a bog.

I am also looking to mount the Radiator in the tray but that is another story... not even sure if it's road legal to do so...

The dry ice wont last long you would be better off running a water to air setup if you want it to cool all day while your are playing they key to a good water to air setup is a decent heat exchanger. If your wanting what you have stated i would be going down the water to air path.

X2, in the drag scene (no not pricilla!) Ive heard the dry ice called a "one shot" or "single shot" because its only ment to last for one run down the quater.

A water to air would be the go id say. They are common in 4wd applications for turbo diesels but i wonder howd they go with a high power turbo petrol? I guess it would be better than a air cooled top mount and a heap better than a front mount full of mud!

x3 water to air with a thermal fan under it to pull air through doing the slow heavy work. some member here has a td4.2 with a neat set up bolted to his bonnet

I was doing some thinking today and came up with the idea of using the AC compressor to pump refrigerant around a coil that is wrapped around the heat sink on the cooler with water surrounding the coil to chill the water. Does anyone know if that could work or if it would get cold enough to chill the cooler and keep it cold? Can this be done without a full size AC "radiator" found in cars? our cool van at work has a radiator for the chiller about 300x300x70mm with a thermo fan and that chills a box about 1.5x1.5x3m in size down to about 3 degree C with about 40m of copper tube. if I was to have a system about this size running a coil with say about 1m long copper tube would it get colder quicker?

I think your best bet would be a water to air intercooler as the others said! Look online and there will be heaps of kits available for the rb26. Also If you want try a dry ice box in front of the air filter, this will lower the ambiantand therefore increase power.

Its not efficient enough mate i have done some research into the air con path myself and have spoken to some people in the very know about it. you cant remove the heat from it qucik enough to then cycle back through the system so it basically ends up doing nothing.
