I don't own a TB42 but a lot of people seem to swear by Penrite (not sure what type). Someone with a TB42 should be along soon to confirm exact blend, etc.

The parts list is basically just a few small SPDT relays and a switch to turn it on/off.
You can just leave it in “D”, but it will always be better to change gear manually...
Something like 90% of the heat generated in an auto trans comes from the torque converter, so it’s always a good idea to keep the converter locked as often as possible.

Feel your pain mate, I had the same problem, only had 1st 2nd and reverse. Currently rebuilding mine at the moment, I don't know what my exact problem was, but I found a broken wire on my valve body...
