I can't say 100% but generally this would be a temp sensor of some sort, I've dealt with a few on cars with electric fans and the fitting as you have described acts as a switch to turn the fan...

Did you remove the dizzy?, sounds like wrong engagement of dizzy drive gears to be doing this.
Try checking TDC firing No1 and position of rotor in relation to cap contacts No 1.

hmmmm, the body is wider on a GU than a GQ. Not sure about the bolts mate, sorry
