Box out would be better, not so easy but there's fair bit of work in taking bits of off to get the the motor out then putting it all back. Need to make sure it's supported well with jacks or think...

I think it's good by the sound of it. If you don't see any milky residue under the rocker cover oil cap, I would be happy.
Sometime you can see milky residue under the oil cap after shorter drives,...

One of my fav Patrols I owned was a gassed TB42e.
If it doesn't get hot enough it will run like a dog on Gas but sounds like you have a few issues.

Yep. It's better to start by replacing radiator cap, then check the reserve tank & the rubber hoses inside/outside reserve tank are in the right place not broken etc. Then a combustion gas leak test...

Check under the oil filler cap too for a milky residue........ if it's milky then it's definitely head gasket, costs you nothing to look too ;)

That's all but bound to be a head gasket! Not the best of news, have it done as soon as you can. Check for water in the oil.

Sounds like it has no thermostat.
Pressure build up could be head/ head gasket, any bubbles in the radiator when it is running (some people remove the thermostat to hide head gasket fault).
