Check the earths. Even add another from the motor to the body then to the battery. GU's are notorious for earthing issues.

The helpfull man at patrolapart says that the 2005 GU TD42ti does NOT have a starter relay fitted. The circuit is ignition barrel, straight to the starter solenoid.
