I would turn VDC off in this situation, I can't comment on the front locker but the rear one is awesome.

The technique I refer to is where you apply just enough brake to hold you on the hill.....(and yes, you should be in 4 low 1st) and at the same time apply enough accelerator to slowly move you down...

if it is running away from you that little bit to fast put the AC on, it will labour the motor that little bit more, be sure it is in 4L 1st gear down hill & do as Dreyboyaus says, feather the brake...

Autos are great off road especially up hill, down hill not so good.
In mud if your spinning and moving forward keep them spinning
turn steering side to side for extra traction as well, keep an eye...

Gday Martin, welcome to the forum. I chose an auto because I believe they are superior for 4wding. Once you get used to it offroad you will be able to get a lot more out of it.
