My guess would be that the hinges are slightly bent due to once having a large spare wheel. Are your old door hinges still good?

remove a FWH's both sides and see if any water has been sucked past the seals ,
hot diffs and cold water not a good combo

If all you are doing with the compressor is airing up then there is no need for a tank. If you want to fit air lockers down the track though the tank will be a winner for that. A Tank will also...

I see now you have closed off the system , so it holds pressure in the lines.
I would be fitting a small tank underneath, to run locker if needed, air horns ,etc
