Update. It appears that the ECU which controls glow plugs and fuel pump timing (not fuel volume as pump is mechanical) might be the problem. Unfortunately sparky can't get there until Monday...

What seat-type nuts are you using on the alloys? Use the tapered nuts on steel rims, and flat seat nuts on the alloys.
