I've used 82's. Not overly plush. I wouldn't recommend them if a plush ride quality is important.
I've used 88's. Very plush, but the GVM upgrade required Ironman Foam Cell Pro's (Pretty good....

The mechanic is probably correct.
I had an issue years ago where running the driving lights caused both fuel gauges to drop to empty.
If the camper was connected the main tank refused to show...

If the gauze strainer is still present in the fuel injection pump inlet it might be restricted.
I'd check that before doing anything else.

Check that the brake backing plate is not touching the brake rotor.

It can be difficult to access in the car.
If it's a factory turbo, cracking the turbo coolant line banjo bolt and allowing it to drain is much easier.
