Thought i would start a thread on diy tips.
I will not be held accountable for an damage incurred by using these tips :tease:
Ok heres one i have used before for a cooling system leak test.
Take a tubeless valve from a mag wheel with the lockdown nut and drill a hole and fit it into a radiator top hose.
Top the system up with water and pump it up with air to just below the rated pressure on the cap.
When you go over pressure the cap should open and allow water into the over flow bottle.
Or if at home and you can use the aircmpressor and put air back in from the overflow outlet to pressurise the system

Wow that seams like an awesome idea. I did see on t.v once how they stuffed a tyre full of grass when they got a flat tyre and were able to drive it still.

Leaking radiator. cut cap rubber it does not pressurise. Add 3 eggs and half one of those little white shakers of pepper. Worked for me.
Carry zippy ties (modern mans wire) metal ones are unbeleivABly strong can be joined and reused with a knife point.
electric tape
roll of electric wire(started header with honda, doubled it up let charge 1 1/2hrs give enough boost tostart.)
If the belt comes off for just alternater don't stop and shut ALL electrics OFF. Its a myth that diesels iwill run with no battery as once there is not enough power to energise fuel shut off solenoid you will stop. (permanently)
No radiator fan (still got water pump) so what, sit 80 90kms/hr won't need it just don't stop or idle.
If washed down creek you WILL NOT be able to smash windows or get out until pressure equal inside and out. If panic you will use the oxygen so sit tight till the water level gets above doors and THEN make break. I always crack the window. Won.t get out while water coming in but I reckon at least it would fill qicker so I'd be up the back near the roof for less time.
Mythbusters tried it and one of them nearly went nuts in the back seat trying to smash window then used all the oxygen.

Always carry ratchet straps, drag chains and rope. As well as the ole faithful duct tape and zipties all these items can get you out of some pretty hairy situations.

Another good one if you don't have a winch is the trusty old block and tackle.
The first time i ever got stuck i had a hand ratchet winch it was useless bent the handle and broke.
But the block and tackle worked great.

I heard years ago that water will actually work in an auto transmission to get you out of trouble in an extreme situation but i think you would be buying a new trans afterwards lol.
Anyone know if it is true.

Carry a bit of 'quick metal' in the toolbox. it is a two part, Plasticine like epoxy, and sets hard enough to file and drill etc. I once broke a chain on my XL250, and smacked a hole in my crank case, compromising the gasket surface in the process. I cleaned all the oil off, built up the wall with quick metal and filed the gasket face flat the next day. It was still going strong two years later.
also, if you back over a low BBQ and smack a hole in the fuel tank, a thong shoved into the hole can help. ;)

GQ old girl over rock. Car stopped so they lever into 4 wheel, continue over, hole in fuel tank so qick metal on and been there for years.
The key number is written on the drivers side door lock and if you ring the right key maker with that number they can cut a key and send it to you.
I rang them and asked but it was going to take a while so instead of taking door apart removed steering lock and hot wired. Drove about 300 k's just praying a copper did not pull me up.
The studs and nuts for the spare are a different size to the wheels on mine the nuts will not fit.
Reverse works longer most autos.
Bearing, pull the line off the brakes stick the right size bolt thought it with two washers and you have three brakes. Pull brakes off and now you can continue with out wrecking the disc rotor till the whole diff is stuffed and the wheel falls off.
Petrol pump Hook onto proper carby hose and siphon out of jerry into carby. Funny -Stick hose in top of carby. Regulate with kink and hold accelerator down hard. Beware back fire for obvious reasons.

Unfortunately didn't get a photo but on sunday down in collie wheeling with mates, 1 of the gq's sprung a leak from the small coolant hose off the manifold just before a circlip. Some heatshrink wrapped and shrunk over the hole and both ends tightened over with zip ties and he was off again. Funny thing was he ended up making it all the way home back to kalgoorlie before replacing it with a new hose.

Theres only two important coolant hoses on the 4.2 diesel. To and from the radiator. Mate was about to call a tow truck when the coolant hose from near the thermostat housing that goes to heater unit burst. Just take other hose off, cut to length and loop it around to where the burst one was. Nobody needs a heater in 40 degree heat anyway.
Got no winch? Stuck in the mud in the middle of nowhere, tie snatchy to close tree. Put in low range first and get passenger(if you have one) to wrap the other end around the tyre. Ever so slowly ride the clutch till it winds you out of the bog hole. Only recommend if your gunna die of starvation or got stuck on the way to the pub.
Fuel pump shits itself, empty washer bottle, fill up with fuel, take off window washer sprayer, stick into carby/manifold. Hold in your washer switch and off ya go. It might pay to carry a fire extinguisher for this one ha ha

When i was young, wow long time ago
I had the compulsary holden breakdown kit
1 screw driver, 1 shifter,1 hammer and a box of matches
If you couldnt start it with the first 3 , then use the 4th option
Good ol simple mechanics never used the 4th option
My uncle years ago had an old holden 6 that was buggered and kept blowing the dipstick out
Ran a hose from the dipstick tube it the rocker cover
Ran like that for ages
