Hi Bob,
I have a '97 RD2.8T with safari snorkel and it goes directly into the main air filter. I also have a '96 RD28.T on original filter setup and still has no precleaner. (Can't see one in the repair manual either).

Hope this helps.

Mike

I have seen people use a pre cleaner from the 4.2's on the rd28 as an air cleaner connected to the snorkel.
This is an alternative the gu zd30 airbox if you look i have a pic of it in this post.

This is the standard air box with the snorkel attached But they are so restrictive and so is the pipe from the airbox to the turbo. I changed mine to a Gu 2.8 airbox and custom pipe to the turbo (when it was still a 2.8), it made a huge difference, the turbo spooled earlier and it revved out easier.

Stupid me i saw a Ironman snorkel on a GQ at the wreckers so I grabbed it not realising that the 2.8 and the 4.2s were different. I spoke to a wreckers in QLD and they told me that if I wanted to use that snorkle which goes all the way to the front I needed to use a nissan pre cleaner on that model.

Na wrong snorkel n don't just use the 4.2 precleaner as your main air filter not good for 2.8
keep it in the shed as later you may want to upgrade to 4.2 td as most people do...
