This is my GU i purchased her around june last year for 20k. She is a 2004 ST 4.2 intercooled turbo diesel. It came with uhf, spotlights, steel winch bar with 10,000lb winch, dual batteries, power to tray for fridge etc, canopy, 2" spring lift, towbar etc. This is from when i first bought her to now and as with anything still a few mods i would like to do to her so its setup as quite a good tourer.

Have been kinda busy in the last few weeks with what little spare time i have. Anyway fitted new exhaust, Purchased a pillar pod and vdo pyro, boost and oil pressure gauges to fit. Also as the girl is into the horses have had a 5th wheel hitch mounted to the ole ute as well and this is by far the best way to tow anything you hardly even know its there even with its size. I have also fitted a superior rear coil brace to help with the extra load will get some pics next time im home.

seems real nice and clean too
Just a quick question, does the intercooler make much difference to the engines performace?
Cheers!

6th June 2012, 10:50 PM
Yeah it is a little low but is a lot more comfortable and has far better road manners than the others gonna keep it this way as a bit of a tourer. Intercooler doesnt mae much of a difference really just helps a lot with EGT's I am going to remove the top mount and put a nice big 600x300x75 front mount on the pair of my patrols.

Had a busy day today. A while ago I bought some HID projector kits off Mick. on this forum. Today I finally got the chance to fit and test :) so to start I will show pics prior to install the pics will go low beam, hi beam and hi beam with spots then a couple at the end of progress and front on. The result is worth the effort and looking forward to getting the ones in my GQ.

Drove around all last night and didnt get flashed once even after I adjusted the lights up. The light is a lot better quality and make it easier to see they also give a better spread than the standard halogens.
I cant comment on the canopy itself as it came with the car when I bought it. The canvas sides I had to put on myself and got them done by "The Canvas Place" at Redcliffe, for the three sides it was $600.

You can see in the pic of the dismantled light the material I had to remove to get the shrouds on and like I said the design of the shrouds allowed me to make it look like thats how they should in my modification of them.

If i remember correctly to adjust the lights park on level ground and at a 10 m distance in front the low beam line should be 10 cm below level.. Something like that can’t remember exactly.
Cheers 600 seems to be going rate was that for head board also or is that chequer plate
nissannewby

The 600 was only for the canvas. I don't know what the canopy itself cost. But it does have a head board that slots into where the standard tray head board would go.

Are these legal or just not as detectable as HID, I've just purchased some 62mm and 77mm magnifying lenses for some lights I'm mucking around with.
Without the lens on to light goes a long way, for some reason the lens gives it a cut off point. My lights are for the Winch and are SMD 6 watt, still like daylight behind bullbar

They just focus the light to ADR specs but still aren't legal if the car wasn't fitted with them from stock , i don't see the issue as long as they are done correctly its bull

I got pulled over by a copper doing an RBT at night and he started walking around my patrol and was looking at my lights. The indicator in the headlight got his attention. He asked me what they where and by this time I was crapping myself. I told him they where projector HIDs. Then to my surpise he said "I wish I could get a set for my GQ". lol
I then told him I actually build and sell the kits. He got my phone number off me and a week later bought a 7 inch britrax 3inch projector kit. I also got an email a week ago telling me how impressed he is with them. He was a highway patrol copper to which are ussally the ones you need to worry about.
Cheers Mick.

You don't have bulbs with a black strip around them do you like a D2R?
Projector HID is not legal but for an extra $100 you can buy self leveling kits and washers which make them totally legal. I don't sell them as no one ever asks and there really useless anyway. lol

We don't make our own and if you go though the ADRs it's pretty clear that if you have a self leveling set up and washers then they are perfectly legal in Projectors reguardless of the age of the car.
This was the reason they sell aftermarket self leveling and washer kits.

OK. Small update. I picked up the 600x300x75 front mount intercooler yesterday for the upcoming upgrades (will post pics later). Also today I had the car dyno tuned at Gympie Diesel. I was quite happy at the outcome with the factory setup punching out 142hp at the rears.
The upgrades that are coming include- TD05 18G turbo (much larger than factory), front mount intercooler, custom intake manifold ( thanks to ben-e-boy for a stock one), 3" stainless exhaust and a high flow airbox lid. Im hoping for the fabled 200hp mark and having been in bens today I think this will be what I aim for.
Cheers.

Got the turbo fitted up and running yesterday. It is certainly better but its hooked up the joke of a factory intercooler which is holding it back big time. Anyone that reads this get rid of the factory intercooler it basically does nothing, there are plenty of items these days that poo all over the factory unit. Hopefully next time im home i can get the rest of engine mods finished. This will be fitment of stainless exhaust, piping up intercooler to the modified intake manifold.
First pic is the old turbo next to the new one. You can see here why a lot of people dont modify the compressor side. The suction side is limited by the 3 bolt flange and so is the charge side.

Hey RLI
Thanks for the response.
Q1. I got the pillar pod off ebay from the 4wd concepts store. Just search for patrol pillar pod and it will come up also. It comes painted to your trim colour, when you make the order you give them your trim code which can be found on the compliance plate. It will be one letter, My trim code is "K". If you have any dramas finding this let me know and I can point you in the right direction.
Q2. The airbox lid I got with the turbo from UFI in WA. Its a a fiddly job modifying the lid but is worth it. It was $150 and is made from stainless.
Q3. The radiator is through Adrad and I got it from a local distributor up here A.R.E. The cost was $1150 and comes with a 2yr warranty. It has a 35% increase in capacity over standard and a 56mm core. The standard one is about 30mm I think but I will post up photos of the difference prior to fitting.

The GU also had its first run today towing. The Mrs loaded up the 5th wheel horse float which would have been sitting around the 2.5t mark. This is the best bit :). The Mrs is also very happy with how much better it pulls the float. I do value her opinion with this because she spends more time in the car than I do as Im always at work.
It pulls better from down, holds boost longer, uses less fuel and this is just with a turbo swapout and the airbox lid. I expect gains to much better once I scrap the useless bit of kit that is the factory intercooler.

It had a 3" exhaust fitted to the factory turbo, however the dump pipe (while still being a heap better than standard) for the standard turbo was only 2.5" and the exhaust then bolts up to this and flares out to a 3 ". So as it sits now the new turbo comes with a 3" dump directly from the back of the turbo and the flared exhaust is bolted to this. I think its a couple of pages back you will be able to see the exhaust and what im talking about.
The new 3" I am getting fitted next monday, its a 3" mandrell bent stainless system with no muffler (the current exhaust has a muffler) so I am looking forward to it sounding a little tougher as well.

I got caught 10 years ago when i fitted the DTS Turbo and intercooler to my 1999 GU 4.2 Diesel. 2,000ks later it started to slip.
I read that both the 4 Terrain Clutch and the EXEDY Safari Tuff Clutch Kits are the go. What is your opinion on clutch's?

G'day nissannewby,
Question: Mate, when you wired up your gauges, did you wiring them into the tail-lights or via the ignition?
Regards,
RLI
The pyro gauge needs ignition power and then backlights are wired into the lighting circuit of the vehicle. I found a spare wire in behind the stereo face to supply a feed for the back lights and used to 12v socket supply for the pyro gauge.

The old clutch started to show signs of wear after I fiddled with the standard setup so it has been changed prior to the fitment of the turbo. However when I removed the original clutch it wasnt the friction plate that was worn, the pressure plate had lost some of its spring pressure thus allowing to clutch to slip due to not enough clamping force.
With the clutch you have 3 options. The Exedy safari tuff which is what I have in both my patrols, the 4 terrain hd which a few on here are running and NPC 6x6 patrol clutch. My pick out these would be the exedy or the npc. I didnt notice any difference in the pedal on either of my patrols but you do lose a little bit of feel with the safari tuff. The NPC item is apparently slightly better than the exedy and still gives factory feel. I would be seeing who you can get the best price with out of these 2 and go that way you wont be disappointed whichever way you choose :)

Ok so a bit of a damage report. I was away at work when I got a distressing phone call from the girl, I told her to calm down and tell me whats had happened. Once a little calmer she informed me that she had dented my car, I had a llittle bit of relief here because she was in such a way I thought she had rolled it or something. I got it out of her that she had quickly jumped out the car to grab something to take down the paddock and her rush hadnt quite pulled the hand brake on enough. Anyway I told her to calm down and take some photos, move the vehicle and get back to me. The damage wasnt as bad as first anticipated but here are the pics.

And back in to the updates. Got home from work saturday lunch and had a busy weekend. I finally got the chance to tow with new turbo and wow it is so much better, it pulls better, driveability is awesome and fuel consumption is down. I am still being held back by the intercooler, I wish there were more hours in a day. Anyway Monday came around and it was time to pick up the modified intake manifold and get the 3" stainless exhaust fitted. A big heads up to Richie of Radius Fabrications who did the manifold and exhaust, this guys work is quality and his prices are very competitive so if your in the market for any fabrication work give this guy a call.

There isnt a huge gain in modifying the manifolds, the factory design sees cylinders 3 and 4 taking most of the air to where 1 and 6 are recieving the least amount of air. This in return has 1 and 6 running leaner therefore hotter than the others. So while you will see a small gain from the larger manifold its all about get even air flow to all 6 cylinders.

I fitted the new 3inch exhaust yesterday, what a difference that has made to the GU.
I also fitted my boost gauge and took the beastie for a decent run around! Traveling at 100ks by the GPS and in fifth gear at 2000 RPM the factory boost reading was at 5 psi. Under-load and traveling at 100ks and in fifth gear at i was doing 2300 RPM and the boost reading was at 9 psi. Would it be fair to say, that the factory max boost is around 8 to 10 psi?
Looking forward to fitting both the intercooler and the Ye-Haa turbo!

OK been a while since an update. Just before chrissy with the help of some members from here I purchased a drop down fridge slide. This will help the girl access the fridge as she is only 5ft tall. Also the wiring that was installed by the previous owner wasnt up to mys standards so I replaced all that and wired in some new stuff.
First off this is the wiring comparison for the supply to the canopy, you can see how small the previous owners wiring was.
http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh493/nissannewby/IMG_1459_zps43e3c87f.jpg
Then I installed the fuse box with a Neg bus bar, switch panel for canopy lighting and a voltmeter. As you can see I have changed everything to anderson plugs as well for a better connection.
http://i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh493/nissannewby/IMG_1460_zps689929e5.jpg
Then the fridge slide went in. This thing is great, the design and placement of the struts makes it a breeze to use even with a full 80L fridge.

While I was in work mode I also fitted some reverse lights as the standard ones are useless. These things turn light into day :)

What part of the intake are you referring to mate? I am not a fan of a top mount and will be going a front mount hopefully soon so I have not and will not be doing anything to try and make the top mount work better. The factory top mounts are rubbish, if you do want it to be better then save your penny's and go for a cross country unit and their scoop.

I was looking at the ARE set up and also the cross country one.
But yeah with the minimal space it may be better going for a front mount instead.

It will all depend where you want to go with the 4.2 modification wise. The factory one and high flow units that are a similar size to factory do have their limitations due to their size.

No progress so no photos. I plan on speaking to a friend of mine ;) about some aluminium so I can start on some custom sliders doing something I haven't seen before but will be a good setup I reckon. Then it's just time and costs that will determine the rest.
I also have to get into stripping the one I just bought so should be busy few months.

Well considering the car with eye lashes was the only car to conquer commando on our last trip then they could be of benefit, also I think every patrol could benefit with a set of seats like MEGOMONSTERs

Well the old girl seems to be down on power. I have change the fuel filter and checked for the filter on the inlet of the pump to no avail, also removed the air cleaner which helped a little but only took it back to where it was previously. I will have to do a little more troubleshooting, although I am going to upgrade the pump, its not really something I can do financially at the moment.

I gave the ole girl a wash the other day, I should clean it more often it certainly looks good when its clean. The ct14 brings the Tyres up really well too.
I also gave her a major service yesterday changing all oils, valve set etc etc. I ended up using hi-tec oils gear oil this time round, its a semi syn 75-90 API gl4 and I can get it at a great price. First impressions are good certainly feels smoother on the changes. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish a few odds and ends and start putting the sound proofing in the cab.
Next weekend should be a busy one, I am planning on getting my sliders done, battery relocation and some tanks fabbed up should be a good outcome.

I wish I had more time though lol. I spent the long weekend making a start on my sliders. As I stated the grade of ally used is far far better then your everday run of the mill stuff. The only ally strong is 7000 series and that is aerospace sort of stuff and high end suspensions etc. Its used for the same reason weight:strength ratio. They are also properly engineered as my mechanical engineer friend is helping me with them.

I'm interested in your opinion on say pwr wta coolers vr's what you have.
I see your Missus drives it more than you, I'm the same.
A build she can handle and give all the beans needed for towing without going over the top.
It's now around 2 yrs I think since you started engine upgrades, Update time!.
How's it going ?.

Thanks Robo
To be honest absolutely zero has been done since last update. I have just started a new job which is 5 minutes from home which is actually freeing up quite a bit of time for me. I have other projects on the go at present and the ute is at the bottom of the list :( , some of this include a custom turbo setup on another GU ute and some rebuilds on some chev diesels.
With the intercooler I will ask you a few questions to start with. What sort of output are you chasing from the 4.2? Are you wanting to do the work yourself? And how much money are you prepared to spend?
The factory Nissan top mount intercooler is woeful mate and pretty much most other options are better than it. A water to air is very good at keeping temps very stable all the time. However heat exchanger, water pump and plumbing all make a big difference here.
Engine upgrades on mine stopped at the turbo mate, personal circumstances, time and money helped with that, as earlier though my new job is opening me up to a lot more time so I can see this changing in the very near future.
If you tell me exactly what you want from your new ride I can certainly help to point you in the right direction.
Cheers.

Anyone really as its not a common mod down here, just interested if the tow capacity is increased?
Robo
12th March 2014, 03:18 AM
I think it can be as the load is placed way further forward of the tow bar.
so load is placed more evenly on 4 wheels.
but thats the best of my knowledge.
the 5th wheelers I saw were very large and there's no way a tow ball scenario would have been legal.
trailers were like 25 ft + long, very modern units, recon they had all the goodies = heavy.
It can hurt to ask a caravan shop.
there has gotta be a winnabago place down your way.
If not I know Newcastle has one.

I weighed the old girl not that long ago and with just Sharee and I in it and half a tank of diesel the ute came back at 2.7t. The weight makes sense as the tray would prob be over 300kg then I have a frame for the 5th wheel which is another 100kg or so , the utes also have the larger sub tank. Then there is all the other normal stuff dual batteries, winch bar with winch, tow bar etc.

Only way really is more negative offset on the wheels really. Mine only touches on the drivers side so I feel this may be related to the lift and not having an adjustable panhard.
