G'Day All,
One of the idler wheels (I think thats what they are called) sheered off, lucky I avoid any major damage. New belts and idler wheels later and it idles perfect, runs well. But it does have a tappet noise about 2000rpm. Any ideas? tappet noise? My bro (who's a toyota mechanic, sad i know) reckons I need to reset the valve clearences? could this be it?

Hi Mate, if the noise is there after the new timing belt and not before, it shouldn't be valve clearence, as you would not have upset the cam doing the belt.
Have you done the harmonic bolt up to spec and loctited it?
Did you place the spring on the tensioner?
Have you done the fan up tight?
Tappet noise doesn't just happen all of a sudden unless something is wrong.
Having said all that, your mate could be right and it may pay to check valve clearence once you have elimenated the above possible causes.

Yeah the issue was it wasn't a smiply changing the timing belt, one of the idler wheels came off, thats why I had to change it.
So its don't something when its come off. It idles fine now, but I'm guessing it could be tappet (hoping).

Just had a quick look at your website to, 2.8L EGR plate, how much am I looking at? Worth doing?

Hi joey, Im sure the rd28 has hydraulic lifters and not tappets.
Blocking the egr is the best small mod you will ever do to the 2.8.

So would that "tappet" sound be the valve clearences???? (sorry if thats a dump question lol)

2..8 EGR plate: $30 with free postage.
As you say the Idler snapped off, the belt would then become slack and there is a stong possibility that a valve has hit the piston and may be slightly bent, causing it to jam slightly and cause the tickng sound.
As soon as a timing belt goes slack, the timing can slip between the cam, injector pump and crank.
The 2.8 is an interference motor and any mistakes in the belt timing will cause damage.
The valves operate directly off the camshaft.
Cheers, the ferret.

It could be, it could be something more sinister tho, hope it's only valve clearance, but if it wasn't doing it before, why would it be doing it all of a sudden.?

I guess coz it got a little (here's hoping) out of time, when the Idler wheel sheered off. So maybe by getting out of time the valve clearence were stuffed up. Well fingers crossed I'm hoping. However I did drive it tonight and it seemed a little down on power :( so maybe its worse then I thought........

Out of time won't alter the valve clearance, out of time will alter the injection timing and valve timing.
If you are down on power slightly, there may be a timing issue.
Best to re check the belt timing, you can do this by counting the number of teeth on the belt between gears. see pic below.

Yep as te ferret said count the teeth & also when aligning it make sure you are looking straight. Can be 1 tooth out & make that sound I made that little boo boo when I replaced mine silly me... yeah my engine was quiet as till up in revs then sounds like 1 tappet is loose..
Cheers check it out & let us know how you go joey_081
