Hi Guys im new to the forum so please forgive me if im posting in the wrong sections.
I got a question if anybody can give me some advice. I owned a GQ 10yrs ago and had the 3L RB30 completely rebuilt to accomodate T3 Turbo. The work was done proffessionally at Monstabishi performance In Botany at the time and i was overwhelmed with the performance i had. I sold it 3 yrs later and forever regret it, and now want to convert and rebuild another.
My Question now is, Am i able to convert to a RB30 engine, will it slip straight in to a manual transmision, what model or engine i will be able to replace it with, and if there are modifications how extreme are they.
I am lost as to what was done when i had mine as the guys in Botany did all the work which was over 10yrs ago.
Any help or advice will be appreciated

The RB30 is a fcatory engine option in GQ patrols
They are the cheaper end GQs and can be had for bugger all

buy a gq with an rb30 sell the motor and buy a vl commodore and install that motor with the efi set up better for power economy and hill starts etc plus big turbo power and tuning with bolt on parfts for the commodore

Thanks guys, appreciate the heads up. wasnt aware that engine came standard in them.. But say i couldnt find a GQ with a standard 3L in it..
If i Purchased a 4.2L, am i able to replace it with the 3L. Will it bold on?

The 4.2 has a larger gearbox wich doesn't bolt up to the rb30
The 2.8 diesel does though.

I am not sure why you would want to go from a 4.2 to an rb30 anyway? 4.2 in petrol or diesel would be a better base for torque check out big rigs build thread he turboed his 4.2 injected motor with great results. http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?1654-The-quot-Tank-quot-Big-Grey-and-Ugly-..&highlight=tank

3L GQ patrols are everywhere
IF you purchased a 4.2 petrol you wouldnt rip it out for a 3L, never ever
Even in stock form a 4.2 petrol will shack down a modest turbo RB30 GQ
Do some reading on the conversions, costs and advantages and disadvantages on turboing an RB30 in a GQ
(Theres plenty of info around both here and at patrol4x4)
Then theres scotty (bigrig) TB42 turbo seems is a weapon

Hi guys, new to the forum but not to the 4x4 scene.
I am presently chasing an RB30 Patrol to drop my 400hp 25/30 Skyline engine into and as far as I'm aware, the RB30 will bolt onto the L28 (MQ), which is a little long in the tooth for my liking. But if the 2.8 diesel is a direct bolt on, it will increase my chances of finding a suitable vehicle.
Before anyone asks, a 4.2 would cost me a fair bit to modify to get to my power target, whereas I currently have an RB25/30 right now to drop in. No more to pay.
I'm moving in this direction because I'm sick of my 2.4TD Toyota Surf. If you've ever driven one of these, you'll understand.

A rb30 will bolt into a mk mq patrol, but is a lot of work, as the engine mounts need to be made. And the gear box mounts modified as the engine is on such a tilt that the efi or carby manifold hits the steering colum. A gq rb30 carby motor makes a big differance in how the mk runs.

You might wanna get some high ratio diff gears for your 400hp skyline motor they are all good in a car that weighs just over a tonne put it in a 3t wagon and it will struggle. If the rb30 is the way you wanna go as others have said source a injection setup for it keep as the sohc as i believe they are better for torque down low and source all the pretty turbo bits that are readily available for the vl turbo/ skyline scene keep it mild for driveability and should be sweet.

Another question...... Sorry for the newbie crap but I don't want to get the wrong car and regret the error.
I have noticed that the GU has a 2.8TD. Is this the same pattern as the RB30 & 2.8TD from the GQ range?
Thanks again guys.

Yes basically the same engine .
The rd28's gq and gu should have 4.6 diffs standard wich would be fine factory rb30 gq's had 4.3's

You are kidding right ? a stock 4.2 will shake down a modest rb30 turbo , have you actually been in one ??
