Hi all,I have posted this problem I have in another part of this forum but I recon I have got it back to front,so I will start again.First my ride 2001 gu 3 ltr turbo diesel approx 190000 km.Problem, the motor started to make a loud squealing noise. It seemed to be coming from the turbo.Had a few mates listen to it and was told bush's in turbo short.Replaced turbo but noise still there.On start up can here it a little then on idle it goes away,add a few revs and back it comes.I have been reading a little on egr probs that the 3.0ltr has and was wondering if this may have anything to do with my problem.also have oil showing on itercooler does this mean that it will have to be replaced.

I'd be looking at the timing tensioner bearing, also the aircon bearing, and the EGR gasket where it bolts to the inlet manifold.
These can all make nasty squeeling noises. sounds like it's not the turbo then $$$$$$!
Fit a catch can, this will solve the problem of oil in the intercooler and keep the MAF cleaner.
Fit an EGR plate.
Squirt some water on the fan belts and see if the squeel goes away!!

Thanks,can you tell me where the tensioner bearing is located.Sorry I should have said before, I removed the belt and the noise was still there.

Nah mate, the timing chain tensioner, you need to remove the timing cover and inspect the tensioner.
Not the belt tensioner, altho that also can make the noise you describe.
If your timing tensioner bearing seizes, big dollars as the valves will hit the pistons.
Your motor is an interference motor and any slip of the timing can be destructive.

I bought a stethoscope with metal probe from local auto part place when hunting down a noise years ago. It is ama2ing what noises the engine produces. What is more ama2ing/unpleasant, is the sound produced when the end of the metal listening probe is carelessly bounced off something hard :-(

I've heard that a long screwdriver, and a length of hose both work. I can't recall whether the screwdriver was rested on the engine, and the handle end rested on cheekbone or similar. Someone who has done either one of these will doubtless clarify.

Be alert to safety issues while doing this :-)

Sneak next door and chop a metre off their garden hose, stick one end in yer ear and use the other end to find the source of the said noise, but as Silver kindly pointed out, take care when poking around a running engine.
In the morning when the guy next door is backing out, just wave and say hi!!!

I would be checking your exhaust manifold gasket.

Drove the patrol today and after about 4-5 mins noise went away.But when the motor had cooled down and then restarted it came back,also noticed coolant coming out from where the hose from the surge tank joins the radiator apart from a leaky fitting can this mean there is air in the coolant system

found problem today.broken bolt on exhaust manifold.no idea how to remove so its off to the mechanic shop.

O well, nearly got it right.

you did better then the mechanic as they thought it was the fan belt and idler pulley.only found broken bolt after they replaced both these items and noise still there.bloody funny how noise can seem to come from one end of the motor but is from a different spot.also when fitting erg shim is it best to fit at both ends of pipe ?

I had a squeak in my engine and learnt that my alternator was going. The only sign was a squeaking noise when I started the car (went after a few minutes). Probably not what is wrong but I am glad that it was checked!

I looked at that but i only replaced the alternator approx 4500 kms ago so no probs there.

A mate used to have that problem with his garden hose - only the choppers were using it to make bongs. He said he wouldn't be so cranky, but instead of chopping off the end, the bong constructors used to chop the few cms they needed out of the middle!! :-)
