Remember this:

Well I finally got around to taking to the Auto 'goto' place near me and the story is a full rebuild at a cost of $3200 to $3800. WTF!

Does this sound about right? Full warranty on the job, but still...

Has anyone else had a major rebuild on this gearbox done recently and how much do you pay?

Hey mate, that price sounds about right. There is a new member that has just been qouted about $2800. You might find the thread in the mechanical section. It depends if your getting a reco torque converter included. I had a reco TC put in and it cost $1400, with a quote for about $3500 in total if the box needed rebuilding as well.

For a full rebuild that price I'm guessing would probable be right.

Check out my Auto rebuild thread, I have listed some of ( not all ) costs there: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?5942-RE4R03A-Gearbox-Rebuild&highlight=gearbox+rebuild

Will also give you an idea of what is involved in a full rebuild.

If i was in your position again, I would ring Wholesale Auto's (http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/) and get a price on an exchange gearbox and then see how much a mechanic will charge you 2 fit it, unless of course you have the time 2 do it yourself

Cheers

Well..... That rebuild thread puts it all into perspective. I've just fired off a question to Wholesale. I certainly would love to have a go at exchange fit myself but facilities and warranty issues bring me back to earth. If I was closer to wholesale I'd get them to do it. But....

Yeh I wished I lived closer when I had 2 do mine.

Where about's on the Central coast are you from, My sister and bro in-law live up around Wyong way.

When you get a price on exchange from Wholesale, post it up for other members that may also be looking at exchange prices in the future.

I got an exchange valvebody and they charged $80 for postage and handling to Tas. Not that bad but one of them is a lot smaller and lighter that the whole box.

Id highly recomend going the Aftermarket Heavy duty "Nomad" Valvebody. Around $1000 but changes the box so much! Gives it such a sharp and direct feeling.

Not up that far. I lurk around the Terrigal Gosford area. As far as posting a price, I don't think that's ethical, suffice to say it put the price I got locally into perspective.
