Hi I'm new and a woman! My 1991 GQ Nissan auto (petrol/gas) car has just had a gearbox breakdown. I love my old girl.

The mechanic said it needs new rings etc (things I know nothing about) but that the gears themselves seem to be okay. He has quoted $2,800 for the job one year warranty or 20,000 kms.

Could someone please advise me if this is a genuine quote for the work - being a female I'm always worried I'm going to be taken advantage of with mechanical work.

Your urgent reply would be so much appreciated. Thank you

Hi, I think that sounds about right for an auto gearbox rebuild. Maybe someone will be along soon that can confirm.
While your waiting, you should jump over to the introductions thread and introduce yourself. Its just something we like new members to do and you may get a few more replies if people know who they are talking to:)
Other than that, Welcome to the forum, hope you get the info you need.:)

Thanks very much Taslucas I appreciate your reply. I also rang a couple of different places and got quoted between $3,500 and $4,500 YIKES it's a good thing I love my old girl. I will take your advice and put up a bit more info on the Welcome forum. And again thanks

Could you explain exactly what happened prior to the gearbox failing.
Like did it start slipping going around corners first or when cold.
Is their any red fluid leaks under the car.

And you might try just jap imports for a quote on a low k import box
They will usually give you two years replacement warranty.
Then you just pay someone else to install it.

yea i am with 97 here mate, you'd be nuts to spend 3K plus on a full rebuild of your box. Crazy!

Why does the guy reckon it needs a rebuild? It'd want to Not Go any more to order that kind of work.

Seriously look at chasing a low kms change over, even a reco from a Transmission place would work out cheaper than doing the rebuild at your mechanics.

There will be Plenty of these boxes around and you should be able to get one fitted. Even call up your local 4x4 wreckers, thy may have a fitting service there and will fit up another and be a drive in drive out for way cheaper.

I am sure it's a wonderful GQ but you are looking to spend anywhere from Half to Full Market value of the whole car rebuilding the auto box!!! I have seen these go on a couple of forums for a couple of 100 bux. They are a pretty tough Auto (like most things Nissan) (other than the 3lt engine) so you should do ok getting s second hand one.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

:gday: Hi just joined today.

I have owned my Nissan Patrol GQ 1991 for 10 years and love the old girl. She is a true work horse because we have horses so in the early years she pulled around the float but now that our daughter doesn't ride any more she just does the hard slog - carry hay, feed, tools etc. With a little nursing here and there she does us proud. Sadly like all old workhorses she does suffer from neglect at time. Right now she is having to put up with a gearbox fix me up. It's auto and the second and third gears were slipping and the overdrive would come and go off as it pleased! Hoping that it's not too big a job! But have been quoted $2,800 for the rings etc as the mechanic is confident the gears themselves are okay. A week's holiday and then the old girl should be back on the road YAY. :clapping: :clapping:

Given the history of use for this Auto it has done quite well being a tow vehicle. If you can find a second hand auto that has not done all that work it will be strong and long and will see you out.

Good luck and again, welcome here.

Sounds like the mechanic thinks that bands need to be replaced, rather than just adjusting.

I wonder what the evidence for this was, perhaps band material in the auto pan (the sump for the auto) or in the filter?
