I am looking at buying a 2.8 or 3.0 l GU and do a TD42 conversion either straight away if I pick up a GU with a dead motor our eventually when a good TD 42 turns up.
How many kms would you expect a 2.8 or 3.0 be good for? Assuming that the necessary precautions are taken to prolong their lives? There are plenty around the 300k mark. I may have to drive it around for a while.

if you're going to do the transplant buy a 3 ltr you can use the gearbox and diffs. the 2.8 gearbox is too small check out marks adaptors for more info. As to engine life I can't help you sorry I have 178000 on the clock just replaced the turbo and nads and runs well 121.4 hp at the wheels with chip and mods

Thanks macca.
I thought I read somewhere that there was a plate on the 3.0l bellhousing which you take off and the 4.2l bolts on after fitting a 4.2l gearbox crossmember to move the gearbox forward and let the motor clear the firewall?
Is the gearbox up to the extra grunt?

As far as km's go...
I've driven a GU with 700,000km's, it surprisingly drove very well! It had a couple of issues like the drivers door hinge had dropped a bit but I was very impressed.
Obviously it depends on the sort of driving but these cars are very truck-like so will go a long way!

That sound about right and yes it's up for the grunt the 4.2 is only a little bit more power. Thay still use the gear box for Ls1 and chev 6.5 ltr conversions

I have a tb42. ..Petrol just about to clock ova 600,000kms and still going strong and has pulled a heavy trailer all its life and has copped a punishment from me on and off rd. .... I think a diesl should last longer than a petrol

Yeah ZD30, I saw it advertised at a dealer with ~250,000km and thought it was a bargain so I went to have a look. When I got there the salesman said "this engine's only done 250,000km"....
I looked and saw the car had done 700,000km, I wasn't impressed but thought it was a good opportunity to see how it drove. It drove quite well, then I told the salesman where to go!

Thanks for the info aaron. Do you mind if i ask you a few questions about the conversion?
I just got a price for everything I would need for a factory TD42T upgrade and it was ~$9500. Not to bad I think.
BearGUST, I wonder how many 3.0l it takes to make 700k?

aaron yeah I was thinking of swaping out my 2.8td as well, so if I may bother you too
did you use the 2.8 diffs & tailshafts ?
& a bloke down here said the engine mounts on the chassis are to be moved but from what I've seen the 2.8 & 4.2 chassis measure up the same
but the later 3.0 chassis is different, did you just use the 4.2 engine mounts & rear crossmember & dropped it straight in ?
Cheers & any help is excelent Help

shor hammer to easy
mate the 4.2 will drop in no probs there just use 4.2 mounts the cross membe is the same as the 2.8's you just need a 4.2 box and mounts. now for the tail shaft you will need 1 from a 4.2 as well. i used my
2.8 diffs tho u will need to change the yok to fit the 4.2 tail shaft. now as for the 3.0l not to shor what the go is there??????
