it's always a dangerous thing cos it usually costs me money. Just throwing it out there, anyone nuts enough to do it or know of some one who has?

I had one years ago in an mq shorty it had a cam aftermarket manifold etc it was ok i guess nothing to rave about.
I only bought it because it was $450 and was full of rust.

big increases in torque can end up with either a gear box full of first gears, or new diff centres or bigger tyres - all of which can be fun.
I'd want to be confident that accessability and heat issues were planned for before going down that path. And you'll have to get to love a dissie at the back of the engine :-). (unless they have put it at the front in the intervening 30 years :-) )
My Dad went through all those dramas with a 350 into a Cruiser years ago. Ended up being reasonably nice, and had a lovely exhaust note, it was possible to imagine $2 coins were dropping out of the exhausts as those vacuum secondaries opened up :-)

I'm inclined to think that a V8 in a Patrol is a good thing, go for it I say.

What si2e/performance is an interesting question. When I had the MQ with the mighty L28 and a suitable exhaust I came to like the note, but I still miss that old Clevo rumble and bark.
And just today the neighbour was loading up his Monaro drag car for a trip to Willowbank, now that makes a beautiful sound - although if I heard it every morning I would have a different view!
The downside is fixing up all the niggles like overheating and access issues etc. I guess these days you need a replacement engine with the right emission standards as well - not a problem when the Old Man did his Chevie transplant.

Heres one a mate had.....
YES I KNOW ITS NOT A PATROL!
Brumby ute, 40 series toyo chasis and transfer, 351 Clevo rear mounted, and auto box of some sort.
Would nearly wheel stand.
No flex to speak of, pretty much a mudrunner only.

just put a 308 into short wheel base auto and it is very nice. It will be even better when i sort the converter lock up as ive lost a few sensors. Its got nice power delivery and sounds sweet!

I was thinking about getting a toy like that until Ynot convinced me that turbo deisels can produce some great torque and a very nice note with the right combos under the hood.

it will end up being a project. i had a 350 straight gas wagon a few years ago (bought it already fitted and it was the channel 7 cars wtf) and currently have a inj 454 in a wagon. have melted 2 clutches in less than 2 yrs so am going auto. if you are setting 1 up for max torque definately go auto. massive power in a shorty is very hard to hold onto but would be heaps of fun. heaps of different cooling set up/options etc. happy to help with any questions if you need.

is the 454 in the GQ wagon in your avatar? Got any vids? That would be damn hectic to drive!

I'm actually quite interested in this thread, as I am deciding what engine I will stick in my project Patrol that I'm planning over the coming years.
However, I have never quite gotten the differences between the different engines, e.g. 350, 454 etc. Can someone please enlighten me!
Cheers!

yes it in the truck in my avatar. :) here is a vid of the burnout comp where I blew the locker and snapped the markes adaptor. it wouldnt let the clutch fully disengage so would fry the clutch in 3rd. you can see the smoke in the inner grd as we come off the line and pull 3rd. tried to pull 3rd again a bit into the skid and it smokes again. Thanks to Murray for the vids.

the difference between a 350 and a 454 is huge torque. from my experience, being 1 350 gq and 1 454 gq. the torque of a 454 is huge, the torque curve goes straight up almost from idle. not a massive difference in HP but i will be changing that. the same torque if not more as a very nice td42t ( i have had 1 as well) but just mass power on top of that. feels like i am forever fixing it so it is going auto with a few more bits as well. dont get me wrong i only went 454 as it was a very cheap purchase as the guy needed the $$. i was VERY VERY happy with my 350, hardly ever put a spanner on it.

Different car makers make different engine sizes measured in cubic inches ford 351 and 303
Holden 308, 304, 350 etc then comes the big blocks 400 plus! as said before monster torque. No replacement for displacement

the issue is also about ease of fitting in the engine bay
eg 351windsors are wider than 350 chevs. 360 chryslers are wider than 351w's
engine physical mass impacts on what happens with steering boxes, auxiliaries such as alternators, compressors. it means that you have to work out whether you can still fit LPG neatly, exhaust fitout etc...
eg I had a 428 in an XB, to get it to fit nicely and allow for flex, the front suspension towers had to be skimmed an inch each.
it also means that when you go to do work on the engine you sometimes have to resort to jacking/lifting it partially or completely out to do something that you might just need to shove your hand into with a stockie.. etc....

They are terms used to describe american made junk typically they have this excuse they use it goes like this (their is no substitute for cubes).
Basically what that means is that backward redneck americans can't build a motor to save themselves.
They need 2-3 times the cubic capacity to produce the same power output as other manufacturers.
Hence the war in iraq they need the oil to produce the fuel to keep these big guzzlers on the road.:animierte-smilies-f

LOL.... Basically nearly close to the truth. heaps of 3 tonne patrols are converting to wrx motors for efficiency. as long as you are ready to drive in low range with crawler gears and do 40km/hr down the h/way. if they keep pumping it out of the ground i will shove it down the tank. mine barely runs and sits in the shed 90% of the time so fuel economy isnt an issue. will be ordering a set of injectors from the states for just under $200 delivered that they guarantee will up my hp by 100hp ( they have my eng stats and i have a programmable comp) , will be interesting to see how much extra torque they produce. to up a td42t hp by 100hp you need to sell a kidney. currently running a torque curve that would embarress a very very good td42t.
power is basically irrelevent. seen many a dyno princess struggle and ride clutches to get back onto the trailers. torque is the key.
power = how fast you hit the tree
torque = how far you moved it.
unleaded fuel $1.47/ litre- 17l/100 = $24.99/100 kms in a big block
diesel fuel $1.52/litre - people claim 12/100 up to 18/100 = $18.24 up to $27.36/100kms in a td42t.
these prices are from motormouths national average and consuption is from different forums, some td42t diesels were 20lt+ /100. 454 consuption is from my junk on 35's with 7 seats, fridge, recovery gear etc.
the amout of torque and power it produces is plenty more than you need and at a few bucks more per 100 kms give me a properly set up chev any day.
I have had many a teething problem with mine that nearly drove me to burn it to the ground on more than 1 occassion but at the end of the day it will be what " I " want. and for the record i loved my td42t and my rexxy but as posted previously , once you have had or been in one the really really is no substitute for cubes.!! but every one is different and maybe we should pull out of Iraq, buy camrys and all sing kumbaya around a camp fire to make the world a better place.
Definately no dis-respect or attack to you 97gqlwb, just my opinion. To big nog just do the conversion if you want, any questions just shoot me a pm and I will try and help. I have had most of the problems.
yes i have owned a big hp wrx,a standard td42, td42t,350,and a 454. the 454 once finished as i have planned will be the cream of the crop as a multipupose truck.

Everyones entitled to an opinion i have just developed a dislike to anything made by gm due to the problems experienced with them and have vowed to never own one again.
"Heres to hoping my td42 lives up to it's reputation and i don't have to spend more time working on it then driving it lol"

I feel your pain in the working on stakes. Luckily my eng is a later model inj type so no dramas yet. with your td42 if you change the oil/filters you will never have to put a spanner on it, they are a great strong engine. i never put a spanner on mine. just everything around it fell apart from abuse...!!!!

I'm looking at fitting an LS1 (350 from a late model commodore) or possibly an LS7 (427) to my GQ wagon. There are a few advantages to the late model injected V8's: No dizzy, lightweight & easy to tune.
I've got a friend in gelong with a twin turbo'd LSX 427 SWB & it looks bloody awesome! Haven't seen it in person yet but the photos are wicked!
Has anyone else done a late model V8 conversion & can conversion parts be purchased anywhere or do I have to make my own?

A mate of mine did for his comp truck. was a good conversion but the eng just seemed to be a bit down in the torque department down low. there is a few turbo/twin turbo vh45 gq's out there. If set up right i think they would be a great allrounder truck. He is building a turbo vh45 gu extra cab ute ATM but will be a few years away yet.

yes mate. he used the infiniti motor and auto and had an adaptor made to fit the transfer. the infiniti auto is basically the same as a patrol auto but with a bigger torque converter. from memory there is a slightly bigger version of the 45 now..??

Ahh that makes sense, there was a gq shorty at my local transmission shop a while back. He had an infinity v8 bolted to the patrol auto but was having a lot of heat issues and had cooked it a few times... He had two coolers and still had trouble. Might have something to do with the TC size? Using the patrol TC instead of the infinity one?
