so i got in the patrol the other to take her for a drive. and cruising along in 5th i could hear a vibrating/rattle somthing like what you would liken to bad bearings, im guessing it came from around the gear box area, but only when i backed off the accelerator. if i accelerated the noise would go away but then return when i backed off the accelerator again. i hope i have worded this ok and someone understands what i mean

any one have any ideas as to what the problem is? it hasnt been driven for about a month also, so was wondering is this could have anything to doo with it.

cheers

nic

If you notice it in both 4th and 5th and it is only when you back off it is likely to be the diff, jump under and have a look at the rear pinion flange is the seal leaking/flange loose. My guess wool be pinion bearing (small one) or loose pinion as under accel it will drive the pinion forward but if loose under decel it wants to get pulled toward the crown wheel which usually causes noise

adjust the volume control on your radio :-).

Just kidding, best to get onto it while the problem is in its early stages!

although mine does it because the pinion angle is out by a few degrees, just been too lazy to change it back

so as a query, is it going to be detrimental to my car running to leave this for a while or should i get in asap and fix it. also, i have no idea what a pinion flange is lol. if someone can point me in the right direction, i should be able to find it. thanks in adviance guys!!!

The pinion flange is the bit that the driveshaft bolts to at the diff, If there is a bearing going you will usually get metal on your drain plug so it might pay to drop the oil and check. If there is a bearing failure it will be cheaper to repair the earlier you get on to it as with most things mechanical.

Did the GQ have the same 5th gear problem as the GU?
