Depending upon your budget mate but the best would be to get a 2006 model TD42 diesel GU.

The 4.2 diesels are a strong reliable motor and any year td42 with low km's would be my first choice.

Welcome to the forum too, don't forget to put up an introduction about yourself in the introductions section mate....Enjoy!

Whats your budget?

Go the GQ mate, TD42 silver top 4.2 diesel, tough as nails, go anyway and looks sexy...haha

$8000-$10,000 would see you with a nicely looked after GQ with some extras put on hopefully.

This GU would be very nice but 30k is most likely out of your range, including myself too!

2000-2002 was the problematic years I thought?

Anything after that 'should' be right mate. And you shouldn't be anywhere near $30K for a decent stock example

I bought a '98 Nissan Patrol GU 2.8TD, ended up costing 12k all in. Obviously going to be lacking in power compared to the 4.2, however, it's been chipped, straight through exhaust and had a pod air filter put in, so although it is still pretty gutless, it's nowhere near as gutless as it might be.... think the 2000 to '02 model 3 litres are the ones to avoid.

Even a good clean SD33T MK is a grat start. But has some limitatios with leaf springs. Put in front and rear lock diffs and theyare almost unstoppable. SD33T is 6cyl 3.2L Deisel with turbo.
