View Full Version : Desperately seeking a Patrol

Hi all.
I have been lurking around here for the past week doing research for my next purchase.
I am looking at buying a GU Patrol 4.2l, but after looking around for a while I have found them to be very hard to find in good condition for a reasonable price. So I think I am going to buy a much cheaper 2.8, 3.0, or 4.5 and drop in a TD42 .
I am hoping to find here all the information on which model will be the best to convert.
Look out, I am going to have a load of questions.

Id say the best one to convert would be the one you will get cheapest mate, 2.8 and 3L come up now and then with blown engines ,so would be one option, or you could get a perfectly good one and sell the engine to recoup some costs.
Personally id wait for what you really want, or learn about the other models (engine types) and what you can do to make them more reliable, such as NADS etc, perhaps get a 3L, do the mods, then if (or is it when) it grenades, do a engine conversion ? it may last forever !

Thanks Todd,
You are probably right about getting a GQ, but I would like something a little newer. I won't rule out out though.

Thanks 04OFF,
Dead 3.0l do go cheap, but from what I have read they need new chair mounts for the engine swap.
I don't think I could rely on a grenade on an outback trip no matter what preparation is done to extend its life.

Welcome aboard mate!! You're on the right path anyway, getting the toughest truck you can, and (even though I'm a Petrol 4.2 owner) throwing in the toughest engine out there ... no doubt you'll find an early model GU that fits the bill, then hunt for the engine ... even with the transplant, you may find you end up not too much out of pocket (less than buying one potentially) and then have a weapon of a vehicle to start 'making your own' ...
Good luck either way mate, and ask away on the questions.

the 3 ltr is a good motor it was the computer control that let it down take the computer away with the manual over rides it goes really well planty of guys here done some km in them in tough conditions or get a gu with a blown motor make sure it's a 3 ltr or 4.5 as the diffs and gearbox are the better ones and the 2.8 is smaller. it's abot 7 to 12 g to put in the 4.2 conversion depending how much the donor motor costs and if you do the work yourself or get the mechanic to do it.

4.5l are regularly under $10k so may be the go. I just have to find out more about the conversion.
I can do all the work my self, I have done a few conversions over the years so custom fabrication is nothing new.

Welcome to the forum mate and good luck with the search.
They are out there but you just need to have your cash ready and willing to go see it at the drop of a hat.
Keep the saved searches on Ebay, Trading post, car sales with alerts set up, keep an eye out on Gumtree and keep all eyes peeled on the roads for phantom for sale signs on Patrols...haha
I was like a hawk for over 6 months and eventually found my pride and joy mate.
Good luck!

I've seen dead 3ltrs go for 5 on ebay and the swap all the parts over great car for 15g not the 30 they want for a 4.2 from factory. all the conversion parts are from marks adaptors to save time and effort on the swap over and tell you how to do it.
