Looks like they do exist:
The Drop Bear, Thylarctos plummetus, is a large, arboreal, predatory marsupial related to the Koala.
Identification
Around the size of a leopard or very large dog with coarse orange fur with some darker mottled patterning (as seen in most Koalas). It is a heavily built animal with powerful forearms for climbing and holding on to prey. It lacks canines, using broad powerful premolars as biting tools instead

It's amazing that they are found in such a large area in Central Australia! But then there's 2 circular areas where they don't inhabit!
Amazing lol!

This has all been covered before, but best to be safe eh?
We often hunt them here in the West as they are good eating and the skin makes a nice lining for sleeping bags.
We also use the skins to our advantage as camouflage, they don't attack each other.
They make better soup than possum.
Cheers, the ferret.

Area 51 and 52 Timbo....lol
That's because the Drop bear eats, roots, shoots and leaves, and the small circles are void of vegetation .

they are on the endangered species list last I heard due to the infestation of vegemite wearing tourists we have here in Oz, apparently the gozontapedes, hoopsnakes and scorpydogs got included at the same time. The old man mentioned when he came back from Canada that their infamous Raboose is now on the endangered species list as well. I did manage to track down a rare photo of a raboose and also the last known sighting of a drop bear
