Hi,
Looking at buying a GQ 4.2 litre petrol patrol would like to get the TI but not too sure what the automatic transmission is like in them and also how the manual transmission compares.

Welcome 2 the forum mate,

Great bunch of members on here always willing 2 help out where they can.

I own a 92 GQ 4.2 EFI TI with the Auto Tranny, They are built tough...... not sure on how it compares 2 a manual as I have never owned a manual 4b.

Cheers

Todd

G'day mate and welcome aboard - great people, information and laughs to be found on here, so join in to make the most of it!!!

The autos are tough mate - you'll get varied opinion on the topic, but I've had nothing but manual 4wd's until this one (6 of them - 3 of them Patrols) and would never go back ... to each his own, but don't be swayed on the thought they aren't tough - I cane mine as most on here know and it stands up to it no drama.

Enjoy!!

g,day Toffas, welcome mate....
in my opinion there is a reason that Patrols have the reputation of being so tough it is thanks to the GQ's being so reliable.... everything on both the GQ's and GU's has been made to last!!! (ok there was a little hiccup with a certain 3.0L but that was quickly rectified)
Enjoy the forum and good luck with the purchase of the patrol.... you wont regret it!!

Even before I turbo'd the engine mate, I tow a 1.8 tonne (fully laden) extreme off road camper trailer, and it never missed a beat.

Gq's are tough and dependable great trucks .
If buying a tb42 auto look out for head gasket issues have the cooling system checked out by a specialist.
The only other problem i have had was the auto if left over night when cold would slip for 500 metres of driving then work perfect all day.
You could stop let it sit for most of the day and fire it up it would be fine but it had done 450 thousand k's.
