Hi Guys,
I've just bought a 98 GU 2.8Td and I have no manuals with it at all, I'm putting it in for a major service next week with Robson Bros in Perth but I'd really like to get to know my way around the beast, I've been a Landie owner before so this Nissan stuff is a bit unfamiliar to me, does anyone have a link to an owners manual that I could download please?
I'd really appreciate it so at least I'm not dependent on garages for the basics of servicing. I went to top up the coolant yesterday and it's the first time I've seen 2 coolant containers in an engine so that got my head scratching for a little while!
Got to get my head around the subtank too (never even heard of one!) Looks like I'm going to be having some fun!!

Thanks

John

My patrol has been serviced at Robson Bros by the previous owner for the last couple of years, and they seem to be extremely thorough. It's definitely a great choice.

G'day John, the coolant reservoirs are for the radiator HEADER tank, that's the one on top, the one on the bottom is the OVERFLOW tank, and should never be higher then the mark thats marked on the tank. Be careful you don't damage these tanks when you lean over the engine to check out the engine bay for anything, with age they become brittle and easily damaged during servicing if abused or leaned on for any reason.
The coolant goes into the overflow when things get HOT, then returns to the header tank when things cool down.
IF the OVERFLOW is ever full ABOVE the mark, you'd better keep serious tabs on what's going on under the bonnet.
Enusre that your coolant is of the ORGANIC type, (Genuine Nissan, or Red stuff from auto suppliers marked ORGANIC) this is very important with the 2.8 as the alloy used in the head corrodes very easily as does the head gasket causing problems you don't want to hear about, suffice to say, a head replacement will set you back in the vicinity of $4,000.
So to avoid such, flush out your system thoroughly, the ORGANIC stuff, DOES NOT MIX with the Non organic, which will turn solid if mixed and block passages that you don't want blocked.
Make sure your radiator is NOT blocked, especially behind the A/C condensor, where crap gets trapped easily, thus reducing the capacity of your radiator, make sure the fins are not broken off externaly and not blocked, sometimes it's neccessary to remove the radiator and have it *RODDED* (meaning rods are forced thru the tubes to clear blockages) the radiator cap is working as it should, if questionable, replace with genuine.
Sub tank operation, Nissan state the subtank transfers fuel on start up for a short time then stops.
How I use mine, I wait until the main tank is 3/4's full, then hit the subtank button allowing transfer, when the main is full, transfer stops, that way I use both tanks preventing build up of algae in either.
I get just under a 1,000 K's from both tanks. I've also found the 2.8 runs smoother, quieter and happier on Gull Bio diesel.
I have a KLEENOIL bypass filter fitted to my Patrol that filters out the minute particles produced by un burnt diesel produced in all diesel engines in an attempt to gain maximum longlevity from the engine and my oil. So far, it seems to be working exceptionly well.
Regards the manual, I purchased the Nissan Workshop Manual shortly after I bought the car, the manual I bought from a book store in town costing $500. There are no less then FIVE seperate books involved, but they certainly cover anything you'd ever come across.
Recently I gave away a CD manual, that I bought off the internet, from a source pointed out to me by a guy on patrol4X4 for $10, I'm sure they are still available .

Hi There JK973
I'm in the same boat... bought my GU2.8 with no manuals/log books. I just really wanna have a read of the basic features (i.e the subtank etc.). I managed to find the online service manual, however it's more for mechanical / electrical work and doesn't go into basic use.

let me know if you do have any luck finding one.. and I'll do the same...

cheers
Danny

Hey guys,

I just bought this CD manual on ebay, is the full electronic Nissan manual, with all suplements.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330708099306?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
Cost was $12 dollars delivered.
Seller only has them at random times.
So luck of the draw.
The alternative is 25 posts on here to able to access the downloads.
Cheers
Bruce

g'day itchyvet,
the best I have done is about 940ks on both tanks in my 2.8 when the fuel light came on, I obviously didn't run her dry so I wonder how much further she would have gone. she has done about 250k and I haven't done anything to the donk except drop the oil + filters every 5k, doesn't use oil and not TOO much black smoke out the rear, any hints on reducing the fuel rate further?

I have only had the truck about 2.5yrs

So the reserve tank trickles into the main initially on startup?

The sub-tank trickles for about 30 seconds, on start up. The circuit is designed to sense the fuel levels in the main and sub tanks. When the fuel level in the main drops to a certain level, the sub should pump into the main. The thread above about pumping across at 3/4 full is not a bad idea; however, the sub tank will only pump for 1 hour according to the manual, does not give flow rates.

What size tyres do you have on? 940k is almost double what I seem to be able to do, I've got 33"s and I think I'm gonna drop them down to 31s next change out...

I would go and get the gregory's manual and keep it in the car, If the gu manual is anything like the gq manual it is a 1000 page document, and binded print outs dont last long in a workshop.

dont get me wrong its a good thing to have., but a manual on hard drive or disc isnt any good when you are out and about

I realize this is an older thread, but was just reading through.

The bigger the tyre, the lower the rev's it takes to get to the same speed as you would on smaller tyres, the better the fuel economy. (e.g. you'll sit on 100km/h on a few hundred lower rev's with 33's then you would with 31's.)

Also I struggle to get to 1000km using the main and sub tanks, although I have noticed with the RD28t's that sitting on 90km/h instead on 110km/h on the highways is not a little, but ALOT better when it comes to saving fuel.

Around town, plus weekend 4x4 driving ( running 33s, front and read bar with winch) I am flat out getting more than 740kms til fuel light on( 15 litres left in main tank, sub empty)

Might have to ease up on the right foot. Or try some new injectors.

Some of the fuel economy figures listed look awesome

oilburner98,
Sorry for not getting to you earlier. Have now sold my 2.8 and running a DI 3 litre GU.
However, confess the fuel consuption on the 2.8 was better. The 3 litre comes in just under 12-14 litres per 100 K's. Keep in mind that's driving @ 100 K's with camper trailer on the back.
Your consumption for the 2.8 is as good as it's going to get. Remember, once the speedo needle goes past 100 K's she starts to suck up the diesel big time, that's why I cruise on 100.
Good to hear your getting a good run from your Patrol, I do miss the old one myself, but LOVE the auto box on this 3 litre.
